🚒 Please only call 999 in a genuine emergency

Thames Valley Fire Control Service is currently receiving a high number of 999 calls about bonfires, barbecues and other potential fire risks.

While conditions remain dry and our fire crews continue to respond to outdoor fires across Oxfordshire, we understand people may be concerned about the risk of fire.

Our responsibility is to provide fire safety advice and respond to emergencies.

Responsibility for maintaining land usually rests with the landowner, while concerns about waste, fly-tipping, environmental nuisance, derelict land or anti-social behaviour may need to be reported to the local authority, police or other agencies.

We continue to work with landowners, farmers and property managers across Oxfordshire to help reduce the risk of outdoor fires where possible.

Please call 999 immediately if:
- You discover a fire
- Smoke or flames are visible
- There is an immediate risk to life or property
- A fire is spreading or is likely to spread

Provide as much information as possible about the location to help our crews reach the incident quickly.

To help prevent outdoor fires

✅ Do not light bonfires

✅ Do not use disposable barbecues

✅ Do not set off fireworks

✅ Dispose of ci******es and other litter responsibly

🚒 July was another busy month for the Wantage crew, attending 67 incidents between 1st and 31st of July 🚒

The warm, dry conditions throughout the month resulted in a significant increase in outdoor fires, with crews responding to incidents across Oxfordshire and supporting our neighbouring Fire and Rescue Services.

During July, we responded to:

🔥 49 Fires
🚨 7 Fire Alarm Activations
🚗 1 Road Traffic Collision (RTC)
🚒 8 Standbys at Other Fire Stations

But even on a hot day, the water can be dangerously cold, causing cold water shock in seconds.

Fifteen young people across the country have already lost their lives this summer.

🚒 Congratulations to FF Sinclair on successfully passing his Fit to Ride assessment today at Wantage Fire Station! 👏

This achievement marks the completion of a significant training journey, having already passed his two-week Basic Firefighting Course and RTC (Road Traffic Collision) weekend course.

Since completing these courses, FF Sinclair has worked hard alongside the crew at Wantage, carrying out ladder and pumping drills to further develop his operational skills and prepare for his fit to ride assessment. He has also dedicated time to learning and memorising the location and function of every piece of equipment carried on the appliance, ensuring he is ready to respond effectively when called upon.

This is a fantastic accomplishment and reflects the commitment, determination, and hard work FF Sinclair has shown throughout his training.

Well done FF Sinclair, a thoroughly deserved achievement, and we look forward to seeing your continued development as part of the team 🚒💨.

Yesterday was the last day of May, and we attended a total of 37 incidents across our community.

Here’s a little breakdown of what we have responded to:

🚑 3 Assists to South Central Ambulance Service
🛠️ 2 Special Service Calls
⚠️ 1 Hazardous Materials Incident
🌊 1 Water Rescue

Every call, no matter the type, requires a quick response, teamwork, and dedication. We are proud to serve our community and be there when help is needed most.

Yesterday, Firefighters Doran and Hackwood from Wantage Fire Station joined others from Wallingford, Goring, and Slade to take on the challenge of climbing Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons - all while wearing full firefighting PPE.

This incredible effort was in support of The Fire Fighters Charity, an organisation that provides vital care and support to firefighters and their families across the UK.

A huge well done to everyone involved, a fantastic achievement for a brilliant cause 👏
