🎂🧡 Today is a very special day at Monkey World as we celebrate Sammie’s 1st birthday! 🥳🎉
Sammie, a female Bornean orang-utan, was born at Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands, but sadly, her mum became ill and passed away when Sammie was just two days old.
Since those very first days of her life, Sammie has needed the care, love and companionship of others to help her grow and develop. 🧡🦧
🌿 In the wild, young orang-utans would spend up to the first nine years of their lives with their mothers, learning the skills and behaviours they need to thrive, from moving through the trees and climbing, to developing the skills they need for life in the forest.
Today, Sammie is growing up at Monkey World, home to the orang-utan Creche of Europe, where orphaned and abandoned young orang-utans can grow up alongside others of their own kind, to learn from one another, develop natural behaviours and build skills they would normally learn from their mothers. 🦧🌿
And one of the most important, and enjoyable, things they learn is how to climb! 🌳
At Monkey World, we use large amounts of sturdy black hosing to create climbing structures for our primates. It provides a versatile way for orang-utans like Sammie to stay active, practise their natural abilities and enjoy their surroundings. 🦧
