It is with great sadness that we announce that Twiggy has passed away at the grand old age of 34. But what a life she had, and what a legacy she leaves at RAC Saddle Club.
I bought Twiggy when she was supposedly 16, although we later discovered she was a little older! She was for Annie, and what a fabulous, forward little jumper she was. In time, she became a much-loved schoolmistress, teaching countless children to ride and giving them confidence, skills and memories they will carry with them for life.
Twiggy was so popular that there was always a waiting list of young Pony Club members hoping to loan her. Laura, Niamh, Cassidy…. The list is long! She taught so many children so much, and over the years became a very special part of the RAC family.
In her later years, Twiggy was incredibly lucky to become part of the Robinson family. Olivia, her sister Ellie, their mum Sam and our now very wonderful Chairman, Major Scott Robinson, took on the care of this special veteran. Hours were spent preparing and feeding her sloppy feeds as she no longer had any teeth. She was loved, cherished and cared for right to the end.
Twiggy also found a new lease of life when our very special Paul took over her care and paired her up in the field with his big 17.2hh horse, Tango. What followed was a truly lovely friendship. Tango fell completely in love with Twiggy, and in many ways she kept him happy, too. It was a case of true love — Twiggy would stand underneath his belly, and the two would cuddle together. They remained devoted companions right until the end.
Twiggy was so much more than a pony. She was part of the history of our club, and generations of children have her to thank for their early adventures in the saddle. We are so grateful to everyone who loved and cared for her throughout her long life.
We would love to hear from past Pony Club members who have photos or memories of Twiggy. Please do share them with us so we can celebrate her remarkable life and all the years she gave to RAC Saddle Club.
Run free, Twiggy. Thank you for everything. You will never be forgotten. ❤️
