💚 ONE YEAR OF HAPPI HOME CARE 💚

A year ago, I took a leap of faith and started Happi Home Care.

I hoped I could make a difference, but I never imagined just how many amazing people I would meet along the way.

Over the past 12 months, I've had the privilege of supporting people through good days and difficult days, helping families find reassurance, sharing cups of tea, listening to stories, celebrating achievements, and sometimes simply being a hand to hold when it was needed most.

I've laughed, cried, worried, celebrated and built relationships that will stay with me forever.

To every client who welcomed me into their home, every family who trusted me with the care of their loved one, and everyone who has recommended, supported and believed in me – thank you. 💚

Running a small business isn't always easy, but knowing that I can make even the smallest difference to someone's day makes every early morning, late evening and busy week worthwhile.

Happi Home Care Case Study – Real Life, Real Care 💚

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference…

Recently, I supported a lovely gentleman living with early stages of dementia. His family were struggling—not because they didn’t care, but because they cared so much and didn’t fully understand what he was going through.

He would become confused about where he lived, ask repeated questions, and sometimes become frustrated or withdrawn. For his family, this was heartbreaking. They tried to correct him, remind him, and keep things “normal”… but it often led to upset on both sides 💔

What we did differently:
Instead of correcting, we reassured.
Instead of focusing on facts, we focused on feelings.
We gently redirected conversations to things he enjoyed
like memories of church, music, and past hobbies.

Over time…
….His anxiety reduced
….He became more settled and relaxed
Conversations felt calmer and more positive
….His family felt more confident in how to support him

His family realised they weren’t “getting it wrong”—they just needed the right approach.

💚 Day 1 – Understanding Dementia

Dementia Awareness Week

Many people think dementia is just memory loss, but it is so much more than that.

Dementia can affect:
• memory
• communication
• understanding
• emotions
• behaviour
• sense of time and place

A person living with dementia may ask the same question again and again, forget where they are, or believe something that isn’t real to us.

But to them… it feels completely real.

Behind every diagnosis is a person who still deserves patience, dignity and kindness.

💚 Day 2 – For Families Going Through Dementia

To the families supporting someone with dementia…

Please know this.

You are doing your best.

It is exhausting emotionally and physically. One moment you feel strong, the next moment you feel overwhelmed.

You may feel guilt.
You may feel frustration.
You may feel heartbreak watching someone you love slowly change.

All of these feelings are normal.

You are not alone in this journey 💚

💚 Day 3 – What Is Sundowning?

Many people with dementia experience something called Sundowning.

This means as the day turns to evening, their confusion can become worse.

You may notice:
• agitation
• pacing
• wanting to “go home”
• anxiety
• sleep disturbance

This happens because their brain becomes tired from trying to process the day.

It is not them being difficult.

They are simply overwhelmed.

Gentle reassurance, calm voices and familiar surroundings can really help 💚

💚 Day 4 – Things Not To Say

Sometimes we say things without realising how confusing it can be for someone with dementia.

Try to avoid saying:
❌ “I already told you.”
❌ “You’re wrong.”
❌ “Don’t you remember?”

Instead try:
✔ “That’s ok.”
✔ “Let’s sit together.”
✔ “Tell me about it.”

Reassurance means more than correction.

Kindness always wins 💚

For someone living with dementia, small things can bring huge comfort.

Things that often help:
• listening to music from their younger years
• looking at old photographs
• familiar routines
• a warm drink and chat
• holding their hand

Dementia is one of the hardest illnesses for families.

Because you begin grieving someone who is still here.

You may still see their smile.

💚 Dementia Insight Week – Understanding “Sundowning” 💚

Many families tell me their loved one seems much more confused, anxious, or unsettled in the evening.

This is something called “Sundowning”, and it’s very common for people living with dementia.

As the day goes on the brain becomes more tired, and simple things can start to feel overwhelming. When evening arrives, your loved one may:

• Become more confused
• Ask to “go home” even when they are home
• Pace around or feel restless
• Become anxious or upset
• Repeat the same questions
• Struggle to settle for the night

This can be really hard for families, especially after a long day when you are already tired too.

A few things that can help:
💚 Keeping evenings calm and quiet
💚 Soft lighting rather than a dark room
💚 Gentle reassurance rather than correcting them
💚 A familiar routine each evening
💚 A warm drink or relaxing activity

Sometimes the most important thing is simply being patient and understanding that their brain is tired.

Remember — they are not being difficult.
They are trying to make sense of a world that no longer feels familiar.
