Bedworth Conservatives are celebrating the opening of the new skate park in the town's Miners' Welfare Park.

The opening of the new skate park is the latest phase of a Conservative-led project to update and upgrade leisure facilities in Bedworth, which includes the new BMX track and the replacement of the old Leisure Centre with a brand new swimming pool, gym, sports hall and other fitness facilities in the new Bedworth Physical Activity Hub.

It was during the Conservatives time in charge of the Council that successful funding bids to Sport England and the then Conservative Government were put together to ensure the project could go ahead.

It was the Conservatives who drove the project forward and guided it through the crucial planning phases and it was under the Conservatives that construction works for the project started.

Councillor Sue Markham, who was the Cabinet member with overall responsibility for delivery of the project said,

"It's great to see the new skate park up open and proving popular. We received criticism at the time the old skate park had to close but it had become unsafe because of a lack of maintenance by the former Labour-run Council. We promised that we would provide a new, improved, skate park and we've delivered on that promise. Bedworth deserves great leisure facilities and this is more proof that local Conservatives in Bedworth deliver for local people"

🧊 Fridge & Freezer Recycling Suspended Across Warwickshire 🧊

👎Warwickshire Conservatives are disappointed that Warwickshire County Council has suspended the collection of fridges, freezers and other cooling appliances at Household Waste Recycling Centres across the county.

The information currently available to us suggests this is part of a wider national problem- a lack of the specialist capacity required, storage capacity full, and strain on fridges and freezers from the heatwaves causing more breakdowns.

We have today submitted a number of questions to the County Council seeking answers on:

🔵 When officers and the portfolio holder first became aware of the issue

🔵 What contingency plans were considered or implemented

🔵 Why elected representatives had not been informed or properly consulted in advance of the suspension being announced.

🔵 What support will be provided to district and borough councils dealing with any increase in fly-tipping

🔵 What options have been explored to provide temporary storage and keep the service operating for residents

In the meantime:

Do not bring fridges or freezers to Warwickshire recycling centres as they will not currently be accepted.

🔵If you are buying a new appliance, check whether the retailer can take away your old one as part of a take-back scheme.

🔵 If your appliance is still working, consider repair, reuse or donation.

🔵 If possible, safely store unwanted appliances at home until recycling capacity improves.

Clearly, we are concerned this situation will lead to fly tipping- please only use licensed waste carriers and be cautious of unlicensed operators offering cheap disposal services. If it’s your waste, you could be held responsible.

Warwickshire Conservatives will continue to press for answers and push for practical solutions that restore normal service as quickly as possible, and to avoid this happening again.

🚑🚑PROTECT THE VOICE OF THE PATIENT 🚑🚑

The Labour Government🥀 want to scrap local Healthwatch organisations. Healthwatch Warwickshire and other local Healthwatch organisations were set up in the wake of Mid Staffs scandal when appalling patient safety failings were revealed.

The reason Healthwatch started was precisely because the previous processes whereby the NHS effectively marked their own homework were not working.

Now the Labour Government🥀 want to go back to the NHS marking their own homework.

Healthwatch Warwickshire plays an invaluable role as a critical friend to drive improvements in the NHS locally. The Conservatives will be bringing a motion to Full Council on Tuesday 21 July calling on 🥀🥀🥀the incoming Prime Minister 🥀🥀🥀to think again, particularly in light of his own representations on this matter last year.

If he doesn't act nationally, Warwickshire Conservatives are calling for local action to protect the voice of Warwickshire's patients and care users. You can read more about Healthwatch's work here: https://www.healthwatchwarwickshire.co.uk/

WARWICKSHIRE TO BE SPLIT IN TWO

The government yesterday announced the scrapping of all 5 of Warwickshire's district and borough councils and Warwickshire County Council, to be replaced by 'North Warwickshire' and 'South Warwickshire' councils.

Controversially, rather than merging all borough and district councils in with the county council, the government have made the decision to create two Warwickshire councils.

'North Warwickshire Council' will include Rugby, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Atherstone and Coleshill.

'South Warwickshire' will cover Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and Stratford.

Warwickshire Conservatives are not supportive of this, but we appreciate there are a range of views and the most important thing is that any decision on this must be made to work as effectively as possible for residents. We will do whatever we can to make sure we take the opportunities, and manage the risks.

'It's not a perfect document', acknowledges one local Liberal Democrat when discussing the South Warwickshire Local Plan. In other news, the Titanic's voyage across the Atlantic involved some minor hiccoughs. What do you think of South Warwickshire Local Plan?

Warwickshire Conservatives agree with Sir Jeremy Wright MP's assessment when he said that he does 'not have confidence that this local plan is sufficiently robust to guide South Warwickshire's future development and I do not think its authors have left themselves enough time to bring it up to the required standard to serve our area's needs without ruining it in the process.'

Another Super Saturday this time, in sunny Rugby Borough! ☀️🎉

Great to be out and about celebrating our communities at three fantastic events today:

🛍️ Rugby Teenage Market – showcasing the talent, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of our young people.
🎈 School Fun Day – bringing families together for an afternoon packed with activities, laughter and community spirit.
🌻 Stretton-on-Dunsmore Village Fête – a wonderful traditional village event with something for everyone to enjoy.

The Chair of Warwickshire County Council said, "A huge thank you to all the organisers, volunteers, stallholders and residents who make these events such a success. It's great to see our communities thriving and enjoying the summer sunshine!" ☀️

👏🚉Congratulations to our Conservative colleagues in North Warwickshire🚉👏

Warwickshire Conservatives agree with Cllr David Wright, who leads North Warwickshire Borough Council, that your councils can and should champion the proper protection of communities. They have shown that HS2 Limited and the Department for Transport are not above the law.

In 2020, HS2 unilaterally decided the tunnel should be extended east by a further 1.8 miles, doubling the length of the original tunnel and encroaching into Water Orton. They didn't get permission, and Conservative-run North Warwickshire Borough Council have won an important legal victory.
