🏳‍🌈Featured in the 'Warwick Castle Unboxed' exhibition at Market Hall Museum is the story of Sir Fulke Greville and Sir Philip Sidney.

They were close friends in Elizabethan England, their bond marked by affection and lifelong loyalty. After Sidney’s death at just 31, Greville was profoundly affected, expressing his grief in an elegy that describes Sidney as “the cause of all this woe” and his life’s joy. Sidney’s loss shaped Greville’s life until his own death years later.

Remembering their connection offers a moment to reflect on the power of love, friendship, and emotional expression throughout history, reminding us that meaningful bonds have always existed, even if not openly defined in their time.

🌈 Pride Month: Hidden Histories from Warwick Castle 🌈

This Pride Month, we’re featuring untold stories and the people behind them. Our new exhibition at Market Hall Museum, Warwick – ‘Warwick Castle Unboxed’ highlights some stories from the past.

From the Warwick Castle Archive:
As a teenager, Lady Sarah Savile shared a secret romance with the iconic Beau Brummell — a renowned leader of fashion, though not of noble title. A recently uncovered letter, penned by Brummell himself, reveals a heartfelt declaration of love preserved within Sarah’s papers.

Later in life, Sarah formed a deep friendship with Lady Louisa Strachan. While the exact nature of their relationship remains unknown, its significance is undeniable. In 1820, the two women were depicted together in a print that hinted at something more than friendship.
Louisa later named her daughter Sarah, perhaps a quiet tribute to their close bond.

🏳️‍🌈 These archives remind us that LGBTQ+ histories have always existed and are part of our shared past.

Wow – what a busy week for Warwickshire Heritage Learning!
We’ve been out and about supporting schools across the county, delivering museum experiences straight to the classroom. Our loan boxes have been heading to Park Lane School, Water Orton, and St Nicholas in Nuneaton, covering topics from the Greeks and Ancient Egyptians to Human Evolution and the Seaside.

It was so lovely to see Mike Townsend our volunteer Beekeeper at our summer volunteer get together on Monday.
We celebrated Mike and his incredible 29 years as our volunteer beekeeper at Market Hall Museum 🐝
Mike’s dedication to our observation hive has been extraordinary, caring for our bees and sharing his knowledge with thousands of visitors. From explaining pollination to the wonders of honey-making, he has inspired curiosity and respect for the natural world.
While we mark his retirement from this role, we’re delighted it’s not goodbye, and look forward to seeing him share his skep-making skills again soon.
Thank you, Mike, for your passion, knowledge, and many years of service — we are so grateful! 💛
