The museum was pleased to welcome Nigel & Philippa Lucie Smith from New Zealand 🇳🇿 They came to see the WW1 Memorial Plaque of Lt Euan Lucie-Smith. You can visit the museum to discover how this item helped rewrite WW1 history.

Did you know that the Pantheon in Paris holds a series of powerful art installations by the artist Anselm Kiefer created in 2020 in memory of the devastation and loss of the First World War. The broken forms in concrete, twisted metal and broken sheafs of corn are interrupted by spouting poppies of remembrance and sacrifice. The venue, which also contains the burials of many famous French individuals including Marie Curie is definitely worth a visit!

We have to say goodbye to our fabulous volunteer Jess who is moving on to a full time job in the education team at the Science Museum. Jess has always been a little obsessed with Bobby the Antelope and as a parting gift she has kindly made the team a batch of Bobby cookies. You will be missed Jess, but we wish you the very best for your future career in museums and do stay in touch!

Today marks the 17th anniversary of the death of Fusilier Shaun Bush of the Second Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. A Warwickshire soldier, Shaun was severely injured by an explosive device while attempting to rescue his colleague Sergeant Valentine in Sangin district, Helmand province on the 15th August 2009. Sergeant Valentine and Fusilier Bush had been on foot patrol when explosions killed Sergeant Valentine and severely injured Fusilier Bush who later died in the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Sally Oak. The museum is proud to display a memorial to Shaun Bush created by soldiers of the Second Battalion and presented to Shaun’s family. The memorial is now part of the museum collection.

Some of our young visitors today have been been learning about soldiers in WW1. Did you know that in WW1, British soldiers only had a soft cap as headwear until Autumn 1915 when it was replaced by the Brodie steel helmet. Thank-you lads for demonstrating this! We are open for FREE for enquiring minds of all ages!
