🚨 Important Update from the Care Workers Union 🚨

We, at the Care Workers Union, are deeply disturbed by the recent violent riots across the UK—driven by stark racism, Islamophobia, and extremist ideologies. These aren't just riots; they're an assault on our core values of dignity and respect, hitting hardest at our most vulnerable communities.

During these trying times, our care workers—heroes of our health and social care systems—are increasingly finding themselves in harm's way. Alarmingly, many, especially those from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, have voiced their fears for their own safety and the safety of those they dedicatedly serve. They're not just worried; they're forced to work under threats of violence that impede their crucial roles.

These riots are a grave threat to the fabric of our society, exacerbated by years of divisive, dangerous narratives and policies. We are calling for immediate, decisive actions to dismantle the systemic racism that plagues our institutions and to put an end to the scapegoating of migrants, Muslims, and people of color.

We urge immediate reinforcement of safety protocols in all sectors to ensure that our care workers can do their jobs without fear. The Care Workers Union stands in strong solidarity with everyone impacted and invites our members, allies, and the community to join hands in this critical time.

We must stand together to transform this climate of fear into one of safety and respect for all, especially those who care for us all. Join us in pushing for a society where care workers are safe, respected, and valued. Your support can make a difference.

Balancing Innovation and Privacy in the AI Era

In today’s digital landscape, balancing innovation and privacy is crucial. Companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) use data from platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to train their AI models, raising significant privacy concerns. Here’s how you can opt-out of Meta's AI training programs and understand the legal context.

Legal Frameworks: GDPR and Data Protection in the UK

The GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 in the UK protect personal data while fostering innovation. Key points include:

Right to Object: Under Article 21, individuals can object to the processing of their data, including profiling.
Automated Decision-Making: Article 22 allows individuals to avoid decisions based solely on automated processing, including profiling.
DPIAs: Article 35 mandates Data Protection Impact Assessments for high-risk processing activities.
Transparency and Fairness: Organisations must be transparent about their data use, including for AI training.

How to Opt-Out of Meta's AI Training Programs
EU/UK
Notification: Look for the AI notification on Facebook or Instagram.
Policy Updates: Search for "right to object" on the Policy Updates page.
Form Submission: Complete the form explaining the personal impact.
OTP Verification: Enter the OTP sent to your registered email.
Confirmation: Meta will review your request and notify you.

US and Other Regions
Service Request Form: Access Facebook's service request form.
Options: Select options to verify/correct data, delete third-party data, or address personal info concerns.
Examples & Evidence: Provide examples and upload screenshots.
Submission: Submit the form for Meta's review.

Important Notes
Meta’s review process may vary, and deletion requests might not prevent future data collection.
Deletion of data means existing data might be removed, but new data could still be collected.

Conclusion
Striking a balance between innovation and privacy is essential. Understanding your rights and opting out of data usage for AI training can help maintain control over your personal information. Robust legal frameworks ensure technological advancements do not compromise privacy. Stay informed and proactive to navigate this landscape effectively.
