🌟 Hambledon Road Repairs – Update 🌟

As many of you may know, the Chairman of the Highways Committee, Cllr Clay, brought to the Highways Committee, on 11th February 2026, his ongoing concerns regarding the deterioration of Hambledon Road and his aim to get action, providing a series of reports and evidence to Hampshire Highways.
After months of correspondence, research, and providing evidence of the road’s condition, we are pleased to share that Hampshire Highways has confirmed Hambledon Road is now scheduled for full resurfacing in October 2026.

While this is still a few months away, Cllr Clay had this to say;
''I am genuinely relieved that the road will receive a proper resurfacing rather than another “patchwork quilt” of temporary fixes. The wait will be worthwhile in delivering a stronger, safer, longer-lasting road surface for our community & road users. I want to acknowledge the support of my fellow District Councillor, Michael Bennett, and express my sincere thanks to our Hampshire County Councillor, Angela Clear, whose guidance and expertise have been invaluable in helping drive this forward. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Highways Committee – pulling all resources together.
Although the resurfacing is scheduled for October, I would ask that we all continue to report specific defects in the meantime. Highlighting issues to Hampshire Highways helps ensure any urgent safety concerns are addressed while we await the full works''

Cllr Clay added that he was proud of the Highways Committee for getting behind the effort and helping secure such an important response. He also expressed his appreciation for the consistent support and hard work of the Highways Clerk, Liz Leeming.

Update on Mill Close Play Area
As some residents are aware, the Mill Close play area has been closed for some time as there are issues over its ownership. The play equipment requires repair but as the Parish Council does not own the play area it cannot carry out the repairs. The Parish Council is currently trying to acquire the play area so that it can repair or replace the play equipment and reopen the play area. If, at any time, it appears unlikely that the owner will transfer the play area to the Parish Council, the Parish Council ask the owner to repair/replace the play equipment so that it can be reopened to the public.

📮 LETTERS TO HEAVEN POST BOX 📮

Last year, Cllr Stallard discovered an article about a young girl who came up with the idea of a Letters to Heaven post box to enable her to send birthday and Christmas cards to her grandparents.
He brought this idea to the Highways Committee to discuss having a letter box within the Denmead Burial Ground. We also discussed the idea with a couple of local funeral directors who agreed it could be beneficial to some residents who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Everyone experiences grief differently. One way which may bring comfort is writing down thoughts or feelings - maybe on an important anniversary, or any day of the year when moved to do so.

The Letters to Heaven post box was erected in the Burial Ground at the beginning of March, and now that the work on the footpath in the North Field is completed, it has today been unveiled by Cllr Stallard and the Highways Chairman, Cllr Clay, for residents who would like to use it.

Every letter or card will be treated with complete confidence and sensitivity.
They will not be opened or read, but will eventually be shredded and composted.
We hope that those who choose to post a letter or card to a loved one in our memorial post box will find comfort through this act of remembrance.
