The last instalment, we moved to The Belgrade Business Centre about 10 years ago. Initially sharing the space but now on our own utilising all the available space.
We came here with both myself and Simon, and two members of staff, so four in total, we now employ a total of 15 staff, have a turnover of £1.5m and have a large varied customer base from the small corner shop to multi site nationals and everything imbertween.
We are still a small company with a fantastic team and offer great customer service, this is what has helped us grow.
These are hard times, but we will beat this and we will come out the other side.
We have a dedicated training room where we carry out fire Marshall, fire warden and fire awareness training. We also have environmentally friendly equipment for the practical sessions of the courses.
You can see our sign wall and how effective the photo luminescent signs are in the dark.
We carry large amounts of spare parts, signs and stock.
Here’s to the next 21 years and more.

Our penultimate move came after a couple of years at Mr Bishops. We were now growing steadily, spending a small fortune on advertising in Yellow Pages, which actually worked, but when I say a small I mean like £2k a month which was a fortune back then. 77b Newton Road, Rushden. Our first proper premises with office space, stores, yard space etc. We shared the building with Colin from MMV Contracting. Whilst hear we took on our first couple of members of staff. Rent was still cheap, especially as split with another company. The building was owned by a ships pilot, he often disappeared to manoeuvre ships into tricky harbours and even down the Suez Canal. These were good times, a proper company, staff, decent premises and starting to turn a proper profit. All the hard work was finally starting to pay off. Spectrum Fire UK Ltd was now firmly on the fire protection map.

Another year or so passed with business growing steadily, but slowly. Most of the time was still being spent pounding the streets knocking on doors. The good news was we had outgrown our premises again. So we moved to another shoe factory, this time in Rushden. We had the entire basement which was a vast improvement in space. The only downside was that deliveries, we were now getting 60-80 extinguishers plus other ancillaries delivered at once, had to be unloaded on a pallet and left down the alley you can see on the right of the building. Then after a full days work out on the streets, we had to come back and move a tons worth of equipment by hand, up the hill, up the entrance steps and then down a full flight of stairs into the basement. Hard work, but oh so worth it. The factory was owned by Richard Bishop, a traditional shoe factory but his specialty was making shoes for the Tweenies. I still see Richard and his wife Wendy around now. This was our first proper premise. We were getting there.

Another year or so passed and with us working 16 hour days, most of those pounding the streets, knocking on doors trying and succeeding to win new business. Our biggest customer at the time was Ilmoor Engineering in Brixworth and they were expanding like no ones business, a month wouldn't go by without a new building to fit out!!
So we outgrew the basement and moved to, wait for it, four bays of dexion shelving at a shoes closer's in Higham ferrers, called S and G Closers, owned by a lovely old man called Gilbert, sadly no longer with us.
This worked really well with deliveries now being able to be taken while we were out working, we could then head to the factory in the evening and put the stock away etc and then head home to crack on with the paperwork. I believe we were now up to around £100 per month rent. I cant find any pictures of this site as again it has now been demolished and has new houses in its place. It was a small estate with Hauser Racing, Higham Tyres and an Alfa Romeo specialist on there amongst 2-3 others.
Onwards and upwards.

After working from the lock up for approx 12 months, we outgrew the shelf and rented a very small corner of a basement at Risedene Press, the owners name was Steve Frost. I think we paid about £80 a month to be there. Prior to that the building was TheNational Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives built in 1957. The only picture I can find is one of it being derelict prior to being demolished and new houses erected. Still a very new company, Spectrum was on the move.
You can just make out the boarded up building.

With plenty of time to kill, and the need for daily exercise I thought I would take a walk down memory lane. This council lock up I rented from the council 22 years ago to store our old Triumph Herald Vitesse in. 21 years ago we started Spectrum Fire UK Ltd. We went and bought a sheet of 6x4 plywood and made a big deep shelf at the end of the garage so we could still drive the car in, the bonnet would fit under the shelf. On top of the shelf we would store all the extinguishers, spare parts etc etc. As you can imagine it was pretty tight in there and not much space at all. But it did the job for a couple of years before we moved on as we needed more space. The next premises...... not there any more but I’m sure I can find some library pictures. Stay safe everyone.

All ready for a return to work. Large delivery received today. Stay safe everyone and we will all be back to work soon.
