The Ri**es
Celebrating Salamanca Day!
Salamanca day is The Ri**es Regimental Day, chosen because the majority of their Forming Regiments held battle honour under the leadership of the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsula Wars (part of the larger Napoleonic wars).
On the 22nd of July 1812, The Ri**es were engaged by the Duke of Wellington to exploit a French over-extension of their forces. Within just 40 mins, The Ri**es Forming Regiments defeated nearly 40,000 French soldiers; liberating Madrid and providing a vital turning point in the battle against Napoleon's army. Today, The Ri**es are recognised as the largest infantry regiment in the British Army.
On the 17th of June 2023, The Ri**es Regiment were officially granted the Freedom of the Town of Wellington, in recognition of our continuing close and historical ties. You will see their flag flying from the Town Council flag pole this week, as part of the Salamanca Day celebrations.
