Plimsoll Studios are researching locations for a new wildlife series for a public service broadcaster. They'll be filming during late 2026 and 2027, and are currently on the hunt for fantastic gardens across the UK to feature.

They’re looking for gardens bursting with character, nature and life - big or small, wild or manicured, urban or rural, private havens, shared allotments or community gardens. What matters is that there’s something distinctive about the garden: an interesting story behind it, or something particularly special about its wildlife, plants, location or people.

Each episode will take us inside one special garden to reveal the secret lives of the wildlife that calls it home and to meet the gardeners behind it. As well as enchanting stories about familiar garden wildlife, we’re especially keen to uncover the unexpected - such as extraordinary connections with wild animals, fascinating examples of animal behaviour, or regular - or even rare - wild visitors. To confirm, the gardeners don’t need to be gardening or wildlife experts. They’re simply looking for people who love their gardens and are curious about the wild world on their doorstep.

If anyone would like to put their garden forward, it would be great to know as much as possible about:
• Their garden: what makes it special - whether that’s its setting, history, design, standout features or a particular focus.
• Their wildlife: what they see regularly, including any individuals or families they recognise, have watched grow up or feel a special connection with, as well as any more unusual or unexpected visitors.
• Them: a little about them and the people they share the garden with.
It would also be wonderful to see photos or videos of them, their garden, house and wildlife, including any camera-trap footage they might have.

There's absolutely no commitment at this stage - They’d simply love to start conversations with people who think there might be something special about their garden (or a garden they know), and the wildlife that calls it home.

Special thanks to Somerset Councillor, Cllr Hobbs and his team for their generous donation of a defibrillator, made in memory of the late Cllr Tony Robbins.

The Mayor, on behalf of Wells Town Hall and Wells City Council, together with Cllr Georgie Robbins on behalf of her family, was delighted to accept this thoughtful and meaningful gift in Tony’s memory.

Expressing her gratitude, the Mayor said:

“A mammoth thank you to Cllr Hobbs and his team for making this possible, and our sincere thanks on behalf of Wells Town Hall.”

This generous donation is a fitting tribute to Tony and will provide a lasting benefit to the local community.

The Mayor meets the Sikhs on Cathedral Green.

On Saturday, this annual Wells Rotary event took place and my Mayoress and I joined President of Rotary, Sharon Haigh, and the lead Sikh organiser, Ravi Singh, to celebrate the coming together of two fantastic organisations. The event is held to mark the friendship between our two communities and to showcase Khalsa Aid working worldwide, to provide disaster relief including when Khalsa Aid worked with Rotary in 2014, to help people on the Levels during the floods.

Wells Moat Boat Race – A Great Day Out

Get ready for one of Wells’ most entertaining and much-loved traditions! The Wells Moat Boat Race returns to the Bishop’s Palace Moat on Monday 31 August 2026, promising a brilliant Bank Holiday packed with fun, laughter and plenty of friendly competition.

Expect homemade rafts, determined crews, fancy dress, spectacularly inventive boat designs and the occasional unexpected splash! With a variety of races for adults and juniors, there’s something to keep everyone entertained as teams battle it out on the historic moat.

It’s a fantastic community day, bringing together families, friends, local organisations and visitors for an atmosphere that is uniquely Wells. The event has a long history, with racing on the Bishop’s Palace Moat and it continues to be a brilliant celebration of local spirit and good-humoured fun.

So bring the family, cheer on your favourite crew and enjoy a great Bank Holiday Monday in one of the most beautiful settings in the country. Come for the racing, stay for the laughs – and keep an eye out for the raft that actually makes it to the finish line!

Heritage Open Days - A Date for your Diary!

Wells City Council is taking part in Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture!

Every September, thousands of places across England organise events to celebrate fantastic history and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

Heritage Open Days returns 11-20 September 2026, and you can find displays within the Town Hall (BA5 2RB), including sewerage mapping of the city in 1860, Sunday restrictions implemented by the Mayor in 1623, and petty sessions summons issued to William Catcott, , for miss selling ‘fancy bread’.

If that wasn’t enough, you can visit other local areas of interest by searching the Heritage Open Days events schedule, showing you all of the venues accessible to you within this period.

Pop the date in your diary, and come and have a look at a little slice of local history, surrounding by the grandeur and tradition of the Town Hall.
