The order becomes effective on 19th June 2026 and will remain in force for eighteen months.
The works are expected to commence on 22nd June 2026 and last for 4 days to enable Wales & West Utilities to carry out new gas connection works.
The contractor has indicated that access for Emergency Services through the site is permitted on this occasion.

Support some of Somerset’s most vulnerable children.

As we head towards summer, it is easy to be drawn into thoughts of lazy holidays and family get-togethers. But you might be looking for something else, a way of giving back to your community and the children of Somerset.

The number of children coming into the care of the Local Authority is at its highest level ever – at over 700. As a result, Route1 is seeing an increase in the number of children who are asking for an Independent Visitor.

What is an Independent Visitor?
An Independent Visitor (IV) is a volunteer who makes a commitment to one child in care. They visit the child once or twice each month to build a trusting, supportive relationship and friendship that can sometimes last many years. The visits might involve going out for coffee and a chat, having a picnic, or going for a dog walk. The relationship can bring life-changing experiences and opportunities to a child or young person – and their IV!

Here’s what one of volunteers said: “I have been a volunteer with Route1 for five years now. Supporting a child in care has been one of the most rewarding things I have done. Last week I had the privilege of taking my young person to the beach for the first time. The joy on their face will remain with me always.”

It sounds rewarding but too difficult for me…
Our youngest volunteer is 19 and or oldest is over 80! Some have experience of being with children, but many don’t. If you are kind, fun and reliable then we can support with the rest. There is extensive, free training which is delivered face-to-face – no Zoom breakout rooms for us! And once trained there is ongoing support.

Your life experience will be highly valued, and you will be trained and supported in developing key skills. Your volunteering can be arranged to suit your availability.

Mayor's update
On Saturday morning I headed to Glastonbury where I learnt more about how our communities can keep informed by GWS Radio. I was shown around the 2 studios at its new location, Northover Mill, and was impressed by the quality of sound systems and opportunities for music recordings as well as radio station management. GWS Radio is manned by volunteers and has grown its popularity over the last few years with more people tuning in for local news and a great mix of programmes and music.
The morning show was being broadcast outside and Sounds Joyful Choir were singing as I arrived. I was delighted to be invited to join them for a joyful song or two and then listened to The Three Bs play a few folk songs as the radio station was broadcasting live. Thank goodness the sun decided to return!

Sunday morning and back in Wells. The Sunday Wells Market got off to a great start. New traders were there alongside some of the Saturday ones and there was a general feeling of happy Sunday morning in the air! Wells Market is extending its offer to shoppers and tourists for a Sunday Market once a month. It was great being there as mayor and to chat with some of the traders, and the market manager.
In the afternoon, Olivia, my mayoress, and I were invited to the Pauline Quirk Academy production of the musical, High School, at the Little Theatre. We loved the way all the students were included in the production and there is definitely a lot of talent in our youth here in Wells- the PQA enables our local Academy to deliver first-class performing arts sessions, giving children the space to learn new skills, make friends, build self-belief, all in a safe and welcoming environment while they explore the world of performing arts. I was told by Principal Lucy that this production has been a year in the making and relies on support and funding from the community

Subject: Portway Garden

The Monday WI Gardening Group put in the plants at the Portway Annexe this morning. They are all pollinator attracting herbs and plants so should help the pollinators find food here and they will also find a home in the bug hotel they created last autumn.

Update from the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Denise Denis:

The Mayor, Cllr Denise Denis and Mayoress, Olivia Denis, welcomed the Wells Ambassadors and Town Crier to the Mayor’s Parlour last night for a reception to thank them for their role in welcoming visitors to Wells and being a point of contact for information to all, in the public areas of Wells in front of the Cathedral and Market Place and in all weather.
In her thanks, the Mayor noted that the Ambassador scheme was set up originally by Ross Young, who sadly died earlier this year, and that everyone missed his drive, enthusiasm and encouragement. He has been replaced by a team of four to take forward this invaluable volunteer service to the City of Wells and she wished them well in the coming year.
