Christ Church Welshpool

Christ Church Welshpool A family who bought a big old church and made {part of} it our home : our restoration journey to ope It was also for sale.

One sunny afternoon, we stumbled across this redundant church, locked up and covered in ivy. Intrigued an appointment was made to look inside. A year later, in 2003, we became the proud, if a little petrified, owners of Christ Church. This is our story... of the restoration of an historic building - playing catch up on a long list of repairs... of the sympathetic conversion of the rear of the nave

into a family home for our three sons... of running a business to enable public access to Christ Church once again... of recording its heritage to help safeguard the building's future... and the story of our family as we live the Christ Church Life.

The ivy covered headstones make such a wonderful home for wildlife. Spotted these two ladybirds sheltering out of the wind, and what is possibly a wren's nest, both hidden amongst the ivy.

This week we mourn the loss of the great ash tree in the churchyard. It has has a long and fortunate life growing from a sappling amongst the graves to a mighty mature tree. It had become quite a feature in the churchyard and dominated the view from our kitchen window.
However in recent years it became very sick with ash dieback and was frequently dropping branches, making it quite a hazard.
On the positive side, its removal has really opened up the churchyard and our kitchen is now flooded with light.
The squirrels are looking a perplexed though as it was one of their favourite trees.

It has been a very emotional time for all of us, as last week Fred moved to America to study at university. His passion for cycling has resulted in him being awarded a cycling scholarship by Marian University in Indianapolis, in the state of Indiana.
Fred is so thrilled to finally have amazing cycling facilities, such as an outdoor velodrome, on his doorstep, and is looking forward to competing throughout America with the university team. A very exciting opportunity for him, even if we are already missing him terribly!

20 years!
This week we mark 20 years of Christ Church living. It is hard to believe that it has really been that long, especially when it feels like we still have so much to do.
However during those 20 years, we have halted the deterioration of Christ Church and re-opened it for public access. We have built a family home and enlarged our family to three sons; one of whom, Owen, has flown the nest and is doing up his own house in Leeds. Our middle son, Fred, is about to leave to study in America, so we are preparing for a lot of change in the next few weeks.
Whilst it has been 20 years of hard work, and there really is still so much to do, we are thriving. Christ Church has been very good to us, for which we are very grateful.

Our William Gray pipe organ has been undergoing restoration for several years now, with the pipes lying on the pews after being cleaned and painted, almost becoming a permanent feature. Last week we welcomed Philip and Karen of Cartwright Pipe Organ Builders to help us put the pipes back to where they belong. It was a busy day of sorting, cleaning and lifting. More work is needed before the organ is singing again, but having such knowledgeable and hardworking people on board to help us piece it back together, it shouldn't be too long before it will be heard.

'Unusual Things', a popular YouTube channel which focuses on finding famous graves and other quirky, unusual things, has featured Christ Church. The channel's creator recently came to Welshpool to visit actor Gary Holton's grave in the neighbouring cemetery, and keen to explore further, he wandered in during one of our open afternoons. It's an interesting video from the point of view of a visitor to Christ Church (even if Karl's classic cars steal the show!)

Repointing again.
Last week we welcomed back steeplejacks Sam and James to continue the task of repointing the harder to reach areas of Christ Church. It is always amazing to watch these guys work, as they are so at ease climbing up to seemingly impossible places.
