🚨 Outdated alarms, poor positioning and missing detection — would you spot the problems?

This property is being renovated into a rental property, so it was the perfect opportunity to bring the fire detection system up to the required standard.

During our assessment, we found several issues with the existing installation:

❌ An outdated alarm system
❌ A detector positioned over the stairs, making it difficult and potentially unsafe to access for testing and maintenance
❌ The detector was also too close to the wall — ceiling-mounted detectors should be positioned at least 300mm horizontally from walls
❌ No heat detector in the kitchen

We designed and installed a new Grade D1 LD2 fire detection and alarm system, providing appropriate detection throughout the property.

🔥 We also use red fire alarm cable to clearly distinguish the fire alarm wiring from the property’s normal electrical wiring. This makes the system readily identifiable during future maintenance, alterations and inspections.

And importantly, fire alarm work isn’t simply something we treat as an add-on to an electrical installation.

Pentacle Electrical and Security Ltd is BAFE Registered for domestic Grade D fire detection and alarm systems, providing third-party certification of our competence for this specialist life-safety work. BAFE’s DS301 scheme specifically covers the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of Grade D domestic systems. (bafe.org.uk)

A fire alarm service is about more than just the panel… 🚨

During a recent fire alarm service, we spotted a damaged fire blanket holder that had been torn.

It may seem like a small issue, but keeping fire safety equipment accessible, clearly identified and in good condition is important.

Rather than simply reporting it, we replaced the damaged holder and also noticed some missing fire safety signage, which we replaced while we were there.

🔌 It’s what’s behind the socket that matters! 🔌

We recently installed a Cat 7 data cable to a garden office, providing a high-quality network connection ready for today’s connectivity demands.

While on site, we also tidied up an existing Cat 6 connection installed by a previous contractor.

The existing cable had been stripped back further than it should have been, exposing more of the twisted pairs than necessary. Rather than simply leaving it as we found it, we carefully re-twisted the cores correctly and secured the cable to help minimise crosstalk and interference.

It’s a small detail, but with structured cabling, the way the cable is installed and terminated can make a big difference to performance and reliability.
