🌟 How Skateparks Transform Communities 🌟

We’ve been looking at real-world examples of how skateparks bring positive change to local areas — and one of the best case studies comes from Campus Pool Skate Park in Bristol.

What started as a disused swimming pool has become a thriving community hub. After two years of consultation and a successful community asset transfer, the space was transformed into an indoor skatepark with a café and hangout area. It now provides:

✅ A safe, accessible place for young people to skate
✅ A welcoming space that supports social connection, not just sport
✅ A sustainable community venue, with the café now generating more income than the skatepark itself
✅ A brilliant example of turning an abandoned building into something the whole area can benefit from

The project shows exactly what a well-designed skatepark can do: reduce antisocial behaviour, give young people a place to belong, and breathe new life into unused spaces.

This is the kind of impact we’re aiming to bring to our own community.

🏙️ Brooklyn Banks is back — and we can do the same in Welwyn! 🛹 https://downtownny.com/news/brooklyn-banks-returns/

After 15 years behind fences, the legendary Brooklyn Banks in New York has finally reopened. Once the heartbeat of the city’s skate scene, it was saved thanks to years of community campaigning and support from people who refused to let it disappear.

That story hits close to home. Just like them, we believe Welwyn deserves a space where young people can skate, create, and connect safely — a skatepark built by and for the community.

The reopening of Brooklyn Banks shows what’s possible when passion meets persistence. Now it’s our turn to make it happen in Welwyn.

💚 Every donation, share, and show of support brings us closer to making the Welwyn Skatepark Project a reality.

Skateboarding is not just for kids - Andy Macdonald, aged 50, competed for Team GB in Paris 2024, making him one of the oldest skateboarders at that level, alongside very young athletes like Sky Brown and Lola Tambling. This shows skateboarding’s broad age-span and possibly changing views of who skateboarding is “for.”

Welwyn Skate Park will have benefits for everyone, regardless of age.

🌟 Help Us Build Welwyn Skate Park! 🌟

Skateparks are so much more than ramps and rails – they’re places of community, care and wellbeing.

Research by Clark & Sayers (2023) found that skateboarding during lockdown gave young people:
🛹 Confidence and resilience
🤝 Supportive friendships and a strong sense of belonging
💚 Better mental health and a real boost in happiness

That’s why we’re fundraising to build a brand-new Welwyn Skate Park – a safe, inclusive space where young people can connect, grow, and thrive.

👉 Support the project today and help us create something amazing for the whole community!

Skateboarding is great for physical and mental health - it's official.

Government research suggests, "Skateboarding is vigorous, skill-building physical activity that helps young people meet movement guidelines; government strategy links sport participation to large health and economic returns (c. £4 social return per £1 spent)"

Our project to raise £250,000 to build Welwyn Skate Park will potentially bring £1,000,000 of social return to our community.

Building a healthier nation by tackling high levels of inactivity, and making sure that the sport and physical activity sector thrives for future generations.
