Please share the below information as there have been several incidents reported in the town of escooters causing problems.

Although e-scooters are available to buy, they are currently illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes and pedestrian-only areas unless part of a legal e-scooter loan scheme. As there are no legal schemes in place in Herefordshire, Shropshire or Worcestershire, e-scooters can only be ridden on private land with the permission of the land-owner.

E-scooters are currently classed as Personal Light Electric Vehicles PLEVs) by the Government and fall under the same laws and regulations that apply to all motor vehicles in terms of requiring insurance, tax, MOT, licence and registration.

There is no mechanism in place at the moment to obtain any of these for e-scooters so as this requirement can’t be met, their use in public areas is illegal. Anyone found using them in public areas risks having the e-scooter seized by the police

Honorary Townsman of Wem
Do you know someone who has made an exceptional contribution to the town of Wem and its people?
The title of Honorary Townsman is the highest honour the Town Council can bestow. Since 1983, the award has been made to recognise individuals whose service and dedication have had a lasting impact on our community. This is a prestigious and selective award and nominations are considered with great care.
This honour is not given lightly, no more than two awards may be made each year and in some years, none are awarded if no nominations meet the standard.
In 2026, for the first time, members of the public are invited to submit nominations but each nomination must be sponsored by a serving councillor.
Successful recipients will have their name recorded on the Town’s Honours Board, joining a select and distinguished group of individuals recognised for their outstanding service.
Key dates:
Deadline for nominations: 17th June 2026
Consideration by Council: 25th June 2026
Final decision: 30th July 2026 Council meeting
If you believe someone truly deserves this honour, please complete the nomination form and arrange for sponsorship by a Town Councillor. https://www.wem.gov.uk/honorary-townsman-award

Celebrating Wem's Amazing Volunteers!

This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a huge thank you to all the incredible volunteers who give their time, energy, skills and kindness to make our town such a special place.

Whether you're helping at community events like carnival, supporting local groups, caring for green spaces, fundraising, checking in on neighbours, serving on committees, or lending a hand wherever it's needed, your contribution makes a real difference every single day.

Our town is stronger, friendlier and more vibrant because of people like you. Your generosity and community spirit help create opportunities, bring people together and make life better for everyone.

Thank you for everything you do. We are proud to celebrate and appreciate each and every one of you this Volunteers’ Week.
