Come join us at Sherwood Pines for a day of learning about the history and archaeology of Sherwood Pines. Archaeologists, historians, researchers, and palaeoenvironmentalists will be there to show what has been found in Sherwood Pines, how the environment has changed throughout history, and how learning about archaeology and history can help promote community and wellbeing.

Date: Sunday April 28th

When: 10am-3pm

Where: Events room at the Sherwood Pines Visitor Centre

There will be a guided archaeology tour of the WWI training trenches that were excavated during our 2023 fieldwork from 1pm-3pm, leaving from the Sherwood Pines visitor centre. The walk will be approximately 4km long and go over rough terrain so please dress accordingly. Spaces are limited so please email our HER Officer Tori at [email protected] to secure your spot or find out more.

Can't make it on Sunday? You can still explore WWI at Sherwood Pines on the HER webpage. Click here to see more: https://her.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/whats-new/forest-to-frontline-archaeology-event-at-sherwood-pines

🗺️🤔 Did we catch you mapping??

In 1835, George Sanderson published his circular map of 20 miles round Mansfield, which shows parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with remarkable accuracy and detail!

It is one of our earliest detailed county maps showing field boundaries, roads, and individual buildings with extraordinary precision.

⬇️ Explore your area as it was in the early 19th Century!

We are delighted to announce we have launched a new Historic Environment Record (HER) website dedicated to thousands of historic sites in Nottinghamshire.

https://her.nottinghamshire.gov.uk

The website provides access to our expansive database of heritage sites, earthworks, historic buildings, and archaeological finds that that make up the rich and varied historic environment of the county.

Features from the 25,000 data entries range from single chance finds, such as Roman coins, to large sites such as WWII airfields and contains records of designated heritage assets such as listed buildings, scheduled monuments and registered parks and gardens, as well as undesignated ones such as other historic buildings and structures, archaeological sites and historic landscapes.

Using the search tools and mapping window, you can explore the range of sources available. This includes George Sanderson’s 1835 map of The country 20 miles around Mansfield, along with aerial satellite map, OS map, and two high-resolution lidar models.

A selection of surveys and excavation reports, plans, publications and collections of air and ground photographs are also available to explore.

We will also keep the site updated with information on the projects we are working on.

📢Archaeology volunteering opportunity

As part of the Miner2Major Veiled Landscape Project, along with the Friends of Moor Pond Wood and York Archaeology, there is an exciting opportunity to volunteer on an archaeological investigation!

This spring there is an exciting opportunity to take part in an archaeological excavation, where you’ll get hands on experience digging an archaeological site, as well as how to take soil samples and what they can tell us about the past environment.

Work will be starting at Moor Pond Wood, Papplewick with the hopes of answering questions about the water management system at Moor Pond Woods and how the landscape was altered to allow for the textile mill industry to thrive in the area. You will have the opportunity to learn the basics of excavation, artifact identification and processing, as well as palaeoenvironmental sampling techniques.

There are several dates throughout April and May but spots are limited, so don’t wait! You can learn more by contacting [email protected] or [email protected].

There is a new resource online that we are excited to share with you! Check out a sneak peek here: https://fb.watch/cCguvDk6K_/

The Miner 2 Major Veiled Landscape project has commissioned the highest resolution LiDAR survey of the Sherwood Forest area that has ever been flown (16cm) and the results are now available to view online. They have teamed up with the National Library of Scotland so that it is possible for anyone to view the LiDAR maps (both a digital surface map and a digital terrain map) alongside satellite maps and their historic map collection.

You can access the LiDAR maps here on the NLS website here: bit.ly/sidebysidelidar and find out more about the Veiled Landscape Project here: bit.ly/m2mveiledlandscape

And keep your eyes peeled on this page as we will soon be sharing details about the forthcoming Notts HER website!
