Good news! We've decided to leave our FREE trail on Hatch Grange up for another week. We know the end of the summer holidays can be tricky for parents, plus with the weather getting cooler, it's a bit more pleasant to be outside searching for book characters ๐Ÿ“š

The trail is up all the time, but the activity sheets and ice pops are only available when the cafe is open!

We know that seeing a headstone lying flat can be upsetting, particularly when it is the memorial of someone you love.

Following a recent inspection at the Old Burial Ground and the upcoming inspection at Quob Lane Cemetery, we want to explain why members of our Grounds Team may lay a headstone down following a safety inspection. We want to reassure our community that

West End Parish Council is responsible for managing Quob Lane Cemetery and the Old Burial Ground on West End Road. Our Grounds Team conducts inspections to identify any memorials that may have become unstable over time due to weathering, deterioration, or general wear.

Under the Local Authoritiesโ€™ Cemeteries Order 1977 (LACO), burial authorities are required to manage cemeteries safely and maintain them in good order. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) supports this, stressing that actions taken regarding memorials should be reasonable and sensitive.

A headstone may be laid down if it poses a significant risk of falling. This decision is based on stability and risk, not just age. Our Cemetery Guidelines state that we reserve the right to lay flat any memorial deemed unsafe.

We fully recognise that memorials represent lives and cherished memories. Our Grounds Team handles this work with the utmost respect and care. Ownership of a memorial's condition lies with the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial. Please refrain from trying to lift or adjust an unstable memorial. If you see a laid-down headstone, contact a stonemason for assistance.

โš ๏ธ Upcoming roadworks in West End โš ๏ธ

We have been sent the following to share from Hampshire Highways.

1. Carriageway micro asphalt works along St James Road. The purpose of the treatment is to restore a surface texture to the carriageway that, in a recent condition survey, was highlighted as poor. The treatment is also designed to regulate the road's shape and seal the road structure against water ingress, which will help prevent potholes from forming.

These works are currently programmed to start on 31st August 2026 and are expected to take up to 2 days to complete. During this time, the road will be closed from approximately 05:00 to 22:00 hours. Vehicular access for residents and businesses will only be maintained if safe to do so during the works, and small amounts of traffic in the early life of the treatment will not be detrimental. Pedestrian access to properties will not be affected, and emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

2. Footway resurfacing on West End Road, from Moorhill Road to Chalk Hill. The works are scheduled to begin on the 7th September 2026 and are expected to take up to 8 weeks to complete using a phased 24hr road closure.

The works will take place in 2 phases as follows.
Phase 1 โ€“ Church Hill/Moorhill Road to Wilderness Heights โ€“ Monday 7th September to Thursday 8th October.
Phase 2 - Wilderness Heights to Chalk Hill โ€“ Friday 9th October to Friday 30th October.

Further details are available on One. Network.
Phase 1 - https://one.network/?GB149097138
Phase 2 - https://one.network/?GB149097180

If you have questions about these roadworks please contact https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/highways - or your county councillor, Cllr Broomfield ([email protected]) for the first set of road works or Tonia Craig ([email protected]) for the second.

Thank you!
