Discover more about Birnbeck Pier as part of next month's FREE Heritage Open Days 📢

Learn more about our project to restore Birnbeck Pier and the important history and heritage of this Grade II* Listed structure as the project team and those involved get ready to host a programme of free events 🙌

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of heritage and culture, held each September.

The Birnbeck Pier events will be taking place between Friday 11 and Sunday 20 September - please note some sessions must be booked in advance, you'll find the booking links in the comments 👇

📆 Tuesday 15 September, 2.30pm to 3.30pm - 'Birnbeck Pier: past, present and future' - a free talk at Weston Museum. Limited tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis so pre-booking is essential.

📆 Wednesday 16 September, 7pm to 8pm - 'Meet the Contractor' - if you’re interested in learning more about the technical side of the restoration project, this is another chance to hear from our two principal contractors Mackley (pier structure) and Smith and Brenson (landside buildings). Taking place at The Blakehay Theatre, limited tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis so pre-booking is essential.

📆 Thursday 17 September, 2.30pm to 3.30pm - 'HMS Birnbeck' - learn how the pier became HMS Birnbeck during the Second World War as it was taken over by the Admiralty and used as a secret base for weapons testing in a free talk by historian Phil Curme. Taking place at Weston Museum. Limited tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-booking is essential.

📆 Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September – 'Cardboard Pier build Workshops' - join a free fun workshop to help make the building blocks for the ‘cardboard pier’ art installation which will be created in Prince Consort Gardens the following week by world-renowned visual artist Olivier Grossetête. Morning, afternoon and evening sessions are available, all taking place in the former Wilkos store in The Sovereign. Pre-booking is essential - please email Super Culture at [email protected]

📆 Saturday 19 September, 11am to 3pm – come and meet the volunteers and team working to restore the Grade II* Listed pier. They'll be on the promenade next to the pier. No need to book for this one - just turn up!

Think before you drive ⚠️ 🙏

We all have a role to play in keeping North Somerset safe for everyone.

Anti-social driving and vehicle-related nuisances can have a significant impact on residents, businesses, and visitors.

Under Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), behaviour such as excessive vehicle noise, driving likely to cause alarm or distress, and congregating around stationary vehicles may result in enforcement action.

Failure to comply could lead to prosecution.

ℹ️ Important information from Bristol Water ℹ️

We can all help protect water resources with small changes to how we use water. Every drop counts.

💧🚫 From 00:01am on Thursday 27 August, a temporary hosepipe ban will come into effect across our supply area. This follows a drought order issued by the Environment Agency to help protect water resources in the River Severn.

Following months of hot, dry weather, significantly below-average rainfall, low river levels and continued high demand, our water resources are under increasing pressure. These conditions are affecting water supplies for people and the health of river systems and wildlife habitats.

We remain in drought. While rain is forecast this week, it won't make up for months of exceptionally dry weather. Our rivers and water resources need sustained rainfall to recover, so please keep using water wisely.

During the hosepipe ban, you must not use a hosepipe to:

👉 Water your garden
👉 Clean your car, patio or driveway
👉 Fill a paddling pool, swimming pool or hot tub
👉 Clean walls, paths or windows

International accreditation for Weston-super-Mare's trees 🌳 💚

Weston's trees and green spaces are being celebrated after the Weston Tree and Plant Group successfully secured international accreditation for the town’s new Community Arboretum.

The Weston Tree and Plant Group – made up of North Somerset Council, Weston-super-Mare Town Council, Weston-super-Mare Civic Society, local interest groups and community volunteers – has achieved accreditation through ArbNet, the international network dedicated to supporting arboreta and tree-focused professionals around the world.

The accreditation recognises the newly established Weston Community Arboretum. This project showcases and promotes the town's 59 most significant individual trees and groups of trees within green spaces within a four-mile radius.

Locations including Clarence Park West, home to its distinctive windswept London Plane trees (see photo 📷 ), and Milton Cemetery, with its diverse collection of trees and wildflowers, are among the sites that help tell the story of the town's natural heritage.

The Weston Community Arboretum has grown from the group's passion for highlighting the rich variety of trees found across Weston. Created not only as a record of the town's trees, it provides an educational and inspirational resource for residents and visitors alike, while encouraging people to value, protect and plant trees for future generations.

The Weston Tree and Plant Group hopes the project will encourage more residents to get involved in local tree planting initiatives and consider planting appropriate tree species in their own gardens and communities 🫶

Today is Ukrainian Independence Day. Held annually on August 24, this year marks 35 years since Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union.

We celebrate the culture, identity and unbreakable spirit of the Ukrainian people.

And we thank all of you across North Somerset who have done what you can to help Ukraine, especially those who have offered support and a warm welcome to Ukrainians coming here.

GCSE results are out today! Good luck to everyone getting them 🤞 🙏

Results day can be difficult. Please take time to be proud of the hard work you've put in and what you've achieved. We hope you've got the results you wanted.

Remember - your exam results do not define you. You're so much more than your exam grades, so please don't worry if your results aren't what you were hoping for or if you're not sure what's next for you.

If you're planning on going into further or higher education then speak to your school or college - they might be flexible on entry requirements if you've just missed your grades.

Check out the National Careers Service - their website has lots of useful support and information.

Talking Futures has some great advice for parents and carers on how to help students as they get their results.

Thousands of young people across North Somerset have taken part in the award-winning knife crime prevention programme in the last year 🙏 ℹ️

The programme helps young people understand the consequences of knife crime, build confidence to report concerns, and learn potentially lifesaving first aid skills.

Together with Avon and Somerset Police, Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Army Reserve medics, our Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP) has

✅ delivered 70 workshops
✅ to 1,879 Year 9 pupils
✅ at nine secondary schools
✅ leading to a 273% increase in young people's confidence to report concerns about someone carrying a knife.
