Berrow Dunes Local Nature Reserve

Berrow Dunes Local Nature Reserve A 15 hectare sand dune site behind Berrow Beach. A special place for both wildlife and people to enjoy. Managed by Somerset Council's Green Estates Team.

The month of June focused on updating our waymarking and installing some new signage on site. It also focuses on some of the beautiful wildlife found here.

In contrast, this video shows the problem of dog poo on site as we start to highlight how much is being left by spray painting them. This also helps other visitors, volunteers and the rangers avoid them when visiting and working within the dunes.

When this video was filmed, 74 poops, including many in plastic dog bags, were counted along the main paths.

Please help us raise awareness of how important it is to pick up after your dog and help us keep these special places free from 💩

Enjoy!

Yesterday, we hosted the Green Estates Team's volunteers at the LNR for our annual volunteer away day where we say a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time, effort and great enthusiasm into all the tasks we give them!

We couldn't do so much of what we do on site without them so thank you all so so much!👏

This May, the Rangers and volunteers at Berrow Dunes LNR have mainly been focused on wildlife and wildflower surveys 🌸 🐦‍⬛ 🦋

It is so important that we monitor what is growing on the dunes and what wildlife call this place home

Sand dunes are a threatened habitat and are still in decline. Our aim is to protect the sand dune specific species and help them spread throughout the nature reserve which, over the years, has become overgrown with fast growing plants such as bramble and sea buckthorn

It is amazing what we find here and such a special place to be

We want this place to remain special and we hope everyone can enjoy it whilst respecting its ecologically sensitive nature

We hope you enjoy!

Our April month in a moment focuses on our very special amphibians on the sand dunes! We’ve had a very busy time with our Great Crested Newt surveys, again having found a great many in the dune slacks!

• Great Crested Newts are protected by law and so we work closely with trained ecologists with a Natural England Protected Species Licence to carry out the surveys

•It is illegal to disturb, harm or kill Great Crested Newts

•They only come to the ponds to breed and lay their eggs, the rest of their lives are spent in grasslands, which is why we work hard to improve them

👉🏼 Watch the video for more facts about these amazing little creatures!

Happy International Women’s Day! We have a fantastic team of female rangers looking after Berrow Dunes Local Nature Reserve.

Physical and manual outdoor roles are historically male-dominated, that is changing but studies show these roles still remain heavily skewed towards men. We’re proud to be increasing female representation.

And to all the women who support us through volunteering, doing all sorts of tasks in all sorts of weathers - thank you. We couldn't do what we do without you. 💚

At the beginning of last week, we installed our new interpretation sign on the LNR. These were funded back in early 2025 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which originally funded the rangers' positions.

When you make your next visit, do take some time to read about the nature reserve and what you might see here!
