Exhibition Update – Goldilocks & the Three Bears 🐻🐻🐻

We’re really sorry to say that due to illness, one of our core bear team has been off sick, which means we’ve had to postpone this weekend’s exhibition. Thank you so much for your understanding 💛

The good news is that we’re delighted to announce the exhibition will now take place next weekend, with extended opening hours on Friday and a later start on Saturday to work around our bi-weekly comic book group.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a community project commissioned by Super Culture and exhibited throughout December at National Trust Tyntesfield. It’s been a huge success and represents an incredible amount of work by so many people.
We’ve decided to bring the exhibition to Old Town Quarry to give even more people the opportunity to see this wonderful work.

The exhibition will be spread across the Artspace Cabin and the Learning Hub, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Weston-super-Mare Town Council

🕰 Opening Times
Friday 23rd: 1.00pm – 6.00pm
Saturday 24th: 12.00pm – 4.00pm
Sunday 25th: 10.00am – 2.00pm

🎨 FREE Creative Activity
During opening times, we’ll also be offering a hands-on creative activity. Come along and decorate your own spoon to take home, inspired by the exhibition – or simply drop in to explore the work and find out more about what Artspace is all about.

☕ And while you’re here, don't forget to visit the lovely cafe onsite Stone & Canvas, we highly recommend scheduling that into your visit!

We can’t wait to welcome you next weekend 🐾✨

Artist Spotlight!

Get to know Jon: “I've lived in Weston for about 13 years with my family; I was born in Manchester. We moved from Essex where I was a teacher for 23 years. In my early life I grew up North Wales . Weston is a beautiful location, I'm also drawn to its faded Seaside chique. I received a Master’s in Fine Art around 2022.

I primarily work from my imagination, my paintings are usually a response to a stimulus. I like to try different ideas and concepts, often my paintings stand alone, are unique but are connected in some way. That could be a word, early childhood memories, cartoons, lyrics from a song, an object, architectural feature (such as a lamppost or candle etc ), a political viewpoint. I tend not to paint the object as it is but try to imbue it with life and some personality. Sometimes they are a vehicle for my own emotional state and existential angst! I often sketch out ideas beforehand as a try out for a composition or work on small canvases. I like to work on a largest scale when given the opportunity.

My wife says my, 'paintings are like marmite, you either love them or hate them’. I would like to incorporate more of Weston into my work. I have known of the 'quarry' since moving here . I even had an exhibition there several years ago .

I have always dreamed of having a studio to practice in. I had my name down for a space for years and always felt it was a distant dream almost an impossibility. I was thrilled and so very fortunate that I was finally granted a studio space. It still hasn't sunk in really and am 'over the moon'.

The quarry is such a fabulous location and has beautiful surroundings and grounds, which is a natural habitat and magnet for the local fauna and flora. I hope to draw inspiration from being in such a creative hub and scenic environment.”

Artist Spotlight! Welcome back Ali Clayton!

Style of Art: Printmaker

Get to know Ali: “I have been involved with Art and Design most of my life - as a student, a lecturer and a practitioner. I trained as a designer in printed textiles. I embrace all aspects of printmaking but specialise in screen print. No two pieces of work are identical because I like to explore variations on a theme. The work is built up slowly, exploring different compositions, and I often find that the end product is nothing like the idea I started with!
Where do my ideas come from? I'm interested in so many things - history, philosophy, literature and the natural and man-made environment. It is often words or phrases which start the train of thought that leads to a visual interpretation.
My work has been regularly selected for the Royal West of England Academy Open Exhibitions."

Artist Spotlight!

Get to know Sandra: “Originally from North Norfolk I have lived in Weston-super-Mare since 1976 and have been drawing and painting for most of my life. My many years of working in a drawing office have given me a love of precision and drawing. Drawing is usually my starting point, sometimes in pencil but often in pen.

My inspiration is the world around me including local landscapes, flowers and wild places. I try to communicate my love for our natural world.

My paintings are produced from my own sketches and photographs. I try to portray the beauty of nature, the world around me and local scenes and I only use the highest quality art materials which will ensure the longevity of my work. These materials include watercolours, wax crayons, pens and pencils on acid free stretched watercolour paper and professional acrylic paint on primed canvas.

Being back at the Quarry will, I hope, give me a new focus going forward. Sketching, drawing and painting give me a particular kind of pleasure and I hope my work reflects some of that pleasure”
