Whitby Museum

Whitby Museum Whitby Museum is run by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society.
(209)

The Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society was established in 1823 and has around 800 members. It is one of the very few remaining Literary & Philosophical Societies that still runs an independent Museum, the older parts of which are often regarded as a 'Museum within a Museum' and have the atmosphere of an Edwardian Museum. The extension, opened in 2005, offers a costume gallery, temporary exhibition room and a lecture (Normanby) room.

It's Solstice today, do you know your Whitby sunrise from your sunset? With a bay facing almost directly North, the Sun appears to rise and set into the sea in the height of summer. Do you know which way to look? which photograph was taken in the morning? (clue the sun sets in the West).
The image featuring the girl is by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941) and the image of the piers is by Hugh Lambert-Smith (1900-1981)Both images are from the Whitby Museum Collection. Whitby Museum open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-4:30pm. Pannett Park, Whitby, UK.
