From little acorns …….
Back in October last year, pupils from Lythe Primary School joined us for a short walk around Mulgrave Woods looking for signs of autumn. During the visit they collected hundreds of acorns that had fallen from the healthy native Oaks in the woods. After placing them in a covered cloche over the winter in the Estate gardens, they began to germinate and emerge from the soil. After checking them last week it seems that we have had an almost 100% success rate, so these will be ready to plant out on the Estate in a year or so.
John Beech, our Countryside Manager said ‘The children gathered some of the bumper acorn crop that we had last autumn from the old native Oak trees here on the estate. We are planning to bring the same children back in two years’ time to plant them out in specially selected areas. This is another great example of community volunteering on the Mulgrave Estate which we are actively encouraging so that local people can become more involved in caring for this beautiful corner of the North York Moors’.
