Whitby Whale Watching

Whitby Whale Watching Wildlife tours on the Yorkshire coast with the Yellow Boats, Whitby. Well now you can with the help of Whitby Whale Watching.

Have you ever wanted to get up close and personal with some of the sea’s most amazing creatures? So few people realise the North Sea, just a few miles off Whitby, boasts such a rich variety of sea life below the surface. Over the past few years the whale watching trips have spotted minke, fin, sei and humpback whales as well as thousands of seals, dolphins and porpoises. Watch for a "blow" as the

whale breathes out, see the arch of the back as whales show themselves whilst swimming towards or even alongside the boat! Experience the smell of fish on their breath, or maybe even a breach - before they disappear again to the murky depths below! You don’t need to travel the world to experience this amazing sight – you can do it off the coast of Yorkshire’s premier resort – Whitby!

This morning we wake to the sad news that we have lost our wonderful crewman and friend Kelvin quite suddenly after a short stay in hospital. Most of our 2019 whales watchers know him as Kelvin in the bar or 'Kelvin on a Saga Cruise'. He couldn't do enough for our passengers and the rest of his crew and his love for the wildlife grew massively as the season developed. Always smiling and enthusiastic for a day on the North Sea. We at the Yellow Boats family will miss him greatly.

Yesterday 25th of September and don't you just love it when a plan comes together?! Straight out to the area we left on Monday and just a mile short there they were. Minkes as far as the eye can see. 'Popping off like party balloons' pick a number between 20 and 30. Then here come the seals in a snorting splashing pack they really have been a great sideshow this year. One minke took a real shine to Summer Queen and swam up close 3 times each time coming down the side and rolling over to show it's belly. Upon leaving this spot to head toward Skinningrove we ran into another 5-6 whales. The plan was to run along the coast looking for dolphins and dolphins is exactly what we found. 4 bottlenose just South of Staithes we traveled with them towards Whitby until we ran out of time.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) my laptop battery has gone flat so the amount of photos in this post are limited and probably not a true reflection of an incredible day! I took hundreds of photos! A glassy sea led to the odd early whale sighting and then a dot to dot trail of seals led to a small feeding frenzy of birds and more seals, minkes of course were with them and built in numbers steadily. We guess we ended up surrounded (and I really do mean surrounded) by 15-20 minke whales. 7 whales at the surface together? No problem! Juvenile whales criss crossing the bow, crossing under the boat as well as lunging around the frenzy. Oh yes and add in some warm autumn sunshine. And if all this wasn't enough after sightseeing the pretty villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay we found 4 bottlenose dolphins playing just off Whitby Beach, doing what you'd expect of dolphins really, breaching and tail slapping before heading north. This trip really pushed the bar, the wildlife was amazing, and the whale watchers weren't bad too 😉
