πŸ”₯ Whitchurch Fire Station – Year in Review πŸ”₯

As 2025 has come to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a busy and rewarding year for Whitchurch Fire Station.
πŸ“Ÿ 170 calls attended by our station this year. These incidents weren’t just within Whitchurch – our crews responded to emergencies right across the county and over the border into Cheshire and North Wales. Wherever we’re needed, we’re proud to serve. Non of these calls are possible without the expertise of our fire control staff at the services HQ.

πŸ“Š Our Top 5 Incident Types
β€’ Automatic Fire Alarms (AFA): 36
β€’ Fire in the Open: 26
β€’ Building Fires: 14
β€’ RTC – Make Safe: 10
β€’ RTC – Persons Trapped: 10

πŸ‘ A huge thank you to all the organisations and partner services who have assisted us throughout the year – teamwork makes all the difference.

🏒 We’re also incredibly grateful to local employers who allow their staff to leave work and respond to emergencies. Your support helps keep our community safe.

❀️ And a very special thank you to our firefighters’ families for their patience, understanding and continued support – we couldn’t do this without you.

πŸš’ Incident πŸš’

This morning we were alerted πŸ“Ÿ by fire control to a Special Service Call at 0420, to reports of the canal bursting its bank at Chemistry, Whitchurch.

On arrival, firefighters carried out an assessment of the situation and the Officer in Charge declared a major incident due to the large amount of water that was heading towards town. This prompted a large-scale response from fire, police and ambulance services, with crews working closely together to bring the incident under control and make the area safe.

There were 14 narrowboaters who were in their boats at the time and the crew led them to safety. Once safe, our fire station was utilised to provide respite and provisions in their time of need.

We would also like to thank the additional fire crews who attended from across Shropshire for their support and teamwork at the scene. Prees Fire Service Tweedale Fire Station Albrighton Fire Station Newport Fire Station Oswestry Fire Station and the Boat crew from Shrewsbury.

Thank you to members of the public for your cooperation while emergency services were in attendance. If you are visiting the area, please remain cautious and do not attempt to gain entry beyond any barriers that are in place.

Our thoughts are with those affected by today's incident and pleased all are safe and well.

πŸš’ Could you release an employee to become an On-Call Firefighter?

Supporting an employee to serve as an on-call firefighter is more than just giving them flexibilityβ€”it’s giving back to your community. 🌟

βœ… On-call firefighters are your staff first, but when the pager goes, they’re trained and ready to protect Whitchurch and the wider community we cover.
βœ… They only respond when needed, so disruption is minimal.
βœ… Employers benefit tooβ€”staff gain valuable skills in teamwork, leadership, problem solving, first aid and health & safety.
βœ… Many businesses find the benefits far outweigh any inconvenience.

We know releasing staff is a big decision, and your local fire & rescue service can work with you to find flexible options that suit your business.

By supporting your staff to serve, you’re helping keep Whitchurch safe. πŸ’ͺ

πŸš’ Breathing Apparatus Training – Joint Exercise

Last night, our crews attended the Training Centre in Telford for an intensive Breathing Apparatus training session.

We were joined by On Call colleagues from Longton, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Even though we’re some distance apart, opportunities like this are invaluable – allowing us to share best practices, compare procedures and strengthen how we work together.

The scenario was a β€œhouse fire – persons reported”, giving firefighters the chance to operate in realistic heat and smoke conditions. Training like this helps ensure our crews are always prepared and striving for operational excellence.

A huge thank you to the Longton crew for making the trip to Shropshire and to our dedicated Training Instructors for their time, knowledge and support. πŸ‘

πŸ“ŸπŸ“ŸπŸ“Ÿ

A couple of calls on Friday evening assisting our Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service colleagues.

Our first call at 1615 was to a Building Fire on Greenbank Business Park, Bradley Green.
A vehicle had accidentally caught fire whilst it was in a unit being worked on.
On arrival the fire was out but the crew carried out checks to the building and vehicle using a Thermal Imaging Camera and cooled the vehicle further with a Hose Reel Jet. Audlem Fire Station provided assistance at this incident.

Two hours later we were mobilised to a smell of burning in a shop in Malpas with a crew from Chester.

Once we arrived we again utilised our Thermal Imaging Camera to locate a motor within a fridge unit which had become faulty and overheated.

Could you become an On call firefighter and respond to incidents in your local area?

πŸ“ŸπŸ“ŸπŸ“Ÿ

A busy start to Bank holiday Monday for the crew at Whitchurch Fire Station.

At 0100 hours our 4x4 vehicle was required for a "Watching brief" of a Wildfire incident which had occurred in Pulverbatch.
The off road vehicle has 200 litres of water with a Fire fogging unit in the rear. We remained on scene dampening down the large area until 0700.
Whilst returning back home station the crew came across an unattended bonfire and extinguished this with the fogging unit.

Just before 0900 the main appliance was alerted to alarms activating at the towns Hospital. This alarm was caused by burnt food products and a full check of the area carried out.

In the afternoon just before 1500 we were once again alerted to assist Wem Fire Station with a hedgerow and undergrowth on fire in Welshampton.

The final call of the day was just before 2100 which was a domestic smoke alarm operating in a property off the High street in town. Crews carried out a full check and no further assistance required.

A quieter week for the crew at Whitchurch Fire Station compared to recent weeks.

We assisted our colleagues from Wem Fire Station with a Combine harvester on fire which had spread to the surrounding area, on Friday afternoon. We provided off road capabilities with our 4 x 4 vehicle.

We were also out yesterday engaging with the community for the Late Party In The Park in Whitchurch.

Attending these events is a good opportunity for the public to see what equipment our appliance carries, provide fire safety advice and an opportunity to answer questions from those wanting to join as an On Call Firefighter.
