Summer time comes and Parade Night activities slow due to a mixture of the hot weather and Cadets away on holiday. Last Thursday with such high temperatures, there was only one option and it was to be outside and involve water - bodily and in drinking!
Hence, the cadets were given Leadership and Team tasks involving lots of water. The first was competition teamwork to transfer the greatest quantity of water between them all within a certain time. As you can imagine, transferring bucket contents overhead led to much dampness and hilarity! Well done Phoenix team who won this one.
Later, it was the turn of all cadets to work together to block the multiple holes of our infamous Water Pipe and float the competition balls out of the top. Did we mention there are 25 holes of differing diameter around the circumference of this pipe 😂 End result? Lots of dampness - and fun - that greatly cooled off the heat of the day ☔

The first stages of a youngster joining the RAF Air Cadets involves a level of instruction on a variety of subjects covering the Air Training Corps (ATC), its parent Service the RAF, and topics covering Cadet Service, first aid, climatic safety and drill. This week our latest Entry reached the completion of this training and hence, their Induction into the ATC. On the night, our Recruits made their commitment to the Corps under the direction of our Sqn's Honorary Chaplain, Rev Pippa White. Afterwards, all Cadets received their Graduation certificates from the Sqn Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Goddard, along with their St John's Ambulance Essential First Aid certificates which was part of their basic instruction. Afterwards, the Cadets were allocated to their new Flights as recognition of their completion of their basic training within the Trenchard Recruit Flight. Our congratulations to Cdts Maddie Barlow, Kaiden Carolan, Oscar Groom and Cailen Rescorla and we look forward to their participation in many more opportunities in the future.👏

Our thanks also to the Sqn Staff and Senior Cadets who have brought these Cadets to the necessary standard 👏

The past month has been a mixed event based upon the school's impending Summer Holidays and the warm evenings. Our first event saw Sarah Radford, a local seamstress, come in to teach the basics of sewing. A skill not often considered important, our Cadets will tell you otherwise as their hard work and efforts lead to qualifications and, with many of those, badges that need to be sewn on!
Another evening, the Cadets were outside and set the Team Race of erecting tents after confirming their position and ground suitability - all taught as part of their Expedition Training syllabus. Despite the relative inexperience, the Teams did well and when testing the insides were pleased to see 'Rev Fred' - our Padre's dog - also join in. The 2nd stage of competition was to dismantle the tent and repack it and all its parts into the original packaging - a challenge known to us all 😆
The latest event was the sporting element of the Cadets' Blue Duke of Edinburgh (DofE). This version of the national DofE is only applicable to the ATC and is a precursor to the National awards but gives them a better understanding of the commitment required. The Cadets will repeat their chosen sports skills over the next 12 weeks and match these to other tasks which will all eventually award to their qualification. Of all 3 nights, well done to those who participated and our thanks to the Staff and visitors who helped support the Cadets.

All work and no play, as the saying goes. Hence, we were grateful to accept the invite from our sister Sqn, 617 (Heber) to their BBQ last week, 9 July. Staff and Cadets attended 617's premises and had a fantastic summer evening, good food and a lot of fun on 617's outdoor and sports area (courtesy of their location on school grounds). Thanks 617!

Saturday, 27 June, our Sqn was out in town supporting the Royal British Legion on Armed Forces Day. Chatting with locals on the many opportunities that come from Cadets, we also assisted the RBL on its publicity campaign for their Poppy Appeal later this year. Due to the hot weather our Cadets were kept hydrated, rested and wore 'relaxed-dress' uniforms, particularly use of baseball caps rather than their usual berets, Well done to all who helped out 👏
