Could you use your practical skills to make a real difference to the lives of older people across Wigan Borough?

Our Handyperson Service helps older people to remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes by carrying out a range of small jobs and repairs.

We’re looking for someone with strong joinery and DIY skills, proven practical experience and an understanding of the challenges older people can face.

You’ll need:
🔧 Joinery and DIY skills
🚐 A full driving licence
🏠 Space to park a work van at home
💪 To be comfortable with physically demanding work, including moving heavy items

💷 Salary: £24,454 per annum
⏰ 37 hours per week
Monday–Thursday: 8.30am–4.30pm
Friday: 8.30am–4pm

No formal qualifications are required. We’re looking for someone with the right skills, experience and attitude to help make a real difference.

What’s better than receiving a card to say thank you?

Receiving one that has been carefully and lovingly designed by the very people your generosity helps us support.

Our brand-new thank you cards have arrived, and they are extra special.

The beautiful design on the front was created by Karen Marsh, Assistant Team Leader for our Home Help team, while the design on the back was created by Carole White, a member of our Hindley Ukulele Group.

Both Karen and Carole are part of the Age UK Wigan Borough family, and that makes these cards mean even more to us.

Because behind every thank you is a person, a story, a friendship and a reminder of why we do what we do.

Whether it’s a Home Helper making someone’s day a little easier, a Bright Days group helping someone feel less alone, or one of our volunteers giving their time to make a difference; every act of kindness matters.

So when we say thank you, we truly mean it.

And now, thanks to Karen and Carole, we have the perfect cards to say it.

Over-60s Go Free at the Cinema

Leigh Film Factory have announced that, thanks to a very generous donation from Dame Judi Dench, older members of the community can enjoy regular trips to the cinema for free from September.

Members will receive their own membership card and be entitled to one complimentary cinema ticket each month for a selected Sunday screening.

Sometimes, a small job can make a BIG difference.

A grab rail that can make the stairs easier.

A step that makes getting in and out of the house safer.

A bit of help around the home when the chores are becoming too much.

Our paid services are all about helping people stay independent and feel confident in their own homes for longer.

Our handy person service can help with things like key safes, grab rails, handrails, steps, garden gates, and other practical jobs around the home. Our home health service can support with general housework, changing beds, shopping, and meal preparation.

As the people featured in our new video explain, it isn’t just about getting a job done. It’s about peace of mind, building trust and making everyday life easier.

The countdown is officially on! In just two weeks, we’ll be teeing off at the Age UK Wigan Borough Charity Golf Day 2026 at the beautiful Dean Wood Golf Club!

Whether you’re coming with colleagues, clients or friends, or joining us on your own, it’s set to be a fantastic day of golf, fun, networking and fundraising all in support of older people across Wigan Borough. 💙

And if you’re flying solo, we’ll team you up with other golfers so you can enjoy the day and make some new connections along the way.
