Your help is needed to secure Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners

East Cambridgeshire District Council is seeking help from community groups, charities and businesses who have contact with older people on low incomes.

Your help is needed to encourage them to check if they are eligible to apply for Pension Credit.

Anyone who successfully applies before 21 December 2024 may be entitled to a £300 Winter Fuel Payment for this year.
Why it's important to act now

Previously the Winter Fuel Payment has been paid to all pensioners.

This year, the government has made the decision to means test the payment - so unless pensioners on low incomes are registered for Pension Credit before the 21 December cut off date, they will not receive this year's payment.

We know that many thousands across East Cambridgeshire sit just above the cut-off for Pension Credit and will now lose their Winter Fuel Payment.

By applying now we want to help our most vulnerable residents to be able to afford heating during the coldest months, thereby preventing 'heat or eat' dilemmas and safeguarding health.

What is Pension Credit?
Pension Credit is a benefit that provides extra money for people over State Pension age who are struggling to make ends meet.

Pension Credit tops up:
• your weekly income to £218.15 if you’re single
• your joint weekly income to £332.95 if you have a partner
• You may get extra amounts if you have other responsibilities and costs.

Help with applying

Anyone who needs help with applying for Pension Credit is advised to contact the community advice team at East Cambridgeshire District Council, or attend one of the council's drop in sessions.

These take place at The Grange in Ely Monday to Friday, from 10am until 4pm.

Drop-in sessions are also held at:
• Soham Library each Wednesday, 10am until midday
• Littleport Library from 10am until midday on a Friday
You can also call 01353 665555.

What you can do
• inform pensioners about the changes so they know about the 21 December deadline
• signpost people who need help with applying to the Community Advice team at the council

Household Support Fund now available for residents on low incomes

As living costs remain high, East Cambridgeshire District Council is continuing to assist residents on a low income though the Household Support Fund.

This current round of government funding, which is being made available between now and the end of March 2025, aims to support households struggling to meet essential housing costs including food, energy bills and other essential items.

The council is able to apply to the Fund on residents’ behalf, as well as offering advice and support with completing applications.

District councillor, Julia Huffer, said: “This vital money is intended to provide a helping hand to those most in need this winter.

“It comes at critical time when we estimate many thousands of our residents will lose out on Winter Fuel Payments because they are no longer eligible.

“I would urge all residents in need of help and assistance with energy bills, food and essential items, to apply.”

Residents in East Cambridgeshire can seek assistance by calling 01353 665555 or visiting the Community Advice drop-ins at the council offices Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm, Wednesdays at Soham Library 10am to midday, and Littleport Library, 10am to midday every Friday morning.

You do not have to be in receipt of benefits to get help. If you are in receipt of benefits, they will not be affected if you receive a payment from the Household Support Fund scheme.
Further details of the Household Support Fund and other cost of living advice is available on the council's website https://www.eastcambs.gov.uk/cost-living/food-help
