Free support for East Sussex high street businesses!
Independent businesses in selected East Sussex high streets, will be able to access free, practical one-to-one business support through the East Sussex High Streets Business Support Pilot.

The programme will provide tailored support directly at business premises. An outreach team will visit businesses, explain the programme, discuss immediate challenges and arrange a convenient follow-up appointment.

Participating businesses will receive a concise business diagnostic, practical advice and a clear action plan tailored to their priorities.

Support may include:
Increasing sales and average customer spend
Strengthening customer retention and loyalty
Marketing and promotion
Improving the physical presentation and use of retail space
Reviewing pricing and profitability
Referrals and signposting to other relevant support
The programme is open to independent businesses operating from premises in selected areas of Rye, Seaford, Newhaven, Mayfield, Eastbourne Old Town and Hastings Old Town.

Take care!

With the Met Office forecasting winds of between 50 and 60mph on Friday (23 October), and gusts up to 70mph possible in some coastal locations, the decision has been taken to close the Bandstand and remove sections of hoarding that may be vulnerable in storm conditions.

The combination of high winds and heavy rain is expected to make the seafront potentially hazardous on Friday.

Two high tides, at 9.46am and 10.05pm, are also expected to generate large waves that could break over pedestrian areas along the seafront. Sections of the promenade will therefore also be closed on Friday.

The safety of residents, visitors and our staff must always come first. We would urge everyone to take the weather warnings seriously and avoid putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

The Bandstand will be reopened as soon as possible.

Update!

Work to prepare Polegate & Willingdon Medical Centre is beginning on 22 October 2026.

Minor groundworks, final measurements and checks to utility connections installed as part of the neighbouring housing development will follow from 26 October 2026. The work is expected to continue into November.

Good intentions can still create a problem - please donate responsibly!

If a clothing bank is full, please do not leave donation bags beside it. Bags left on the pavement count as fly-tipping and can be torn open by animals or bad weather, scattering clothes across roads and footpaths.

This creates hazards, ruins valuable donations and costs councils and charities time and money to clear.

If the bank is full, hold onto your donations until it is emptied or take them to an open charity shop.

Have Your Say: Making Jevington & Filching Roads Safer

The Jevington and Filching Community Association wants to hear your views on proposals to explore improvements to the C40 Jevington Road.

Local concerns include speeding, limited pavement space, pedestrian and cyclist safety, concealed entrances, overtaking and parking.

Options could include a 20mph limit in Jevington and soft traffic-calming measures, subject to East Sussex County Council assessment and community support.
