🌳 Why Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place Matters 🌳

Planting trees is powerful - but choosing the right species and the right location is key to delivering real gains for nature 💪

By focusing on native tree species and planting sites where they will have the greatest impact - linking existing wildlife areas, supporting priority habitats, and avoiding harm to valuable ecosystems - we can deliver meaningful benefits for nature 🌍

Whether strengthening hedgerows, reconnecting fragmented habitats, or restoring degraded landscapes, planting in the right place can make a lasting difference 🌿🐝

🌱 Every decision counts. Together, we can create a more connected, resilient landscape across Hampshire.

🌿🌳 It’s the final days of National Hedgerow Week! 🌳🌿
As we round off the week, we’re highlighting the importance of 'coppice corridors' - an overlooked but vital part of our hedgerow networks.
Coppicing is a traditional management technique where trees are cut back close to ground level to rejuvenate old and sparse hedgerows where laying isn't an option. Whilst it can look pretty drastic at first, it encourages strong, dense regrowth and allows extra trees to be planted in the gaps - helping to extend the life of the hedge and create a richer habitat.
When restored hedgerows link together across farmland and countryside, they form coppice corridors - vital green pathways that allow wildlife to move between remote habitats and thrive.
By supporting healthier, better-connected hedgerows, coppice corridors play an essential role in building more resilient landscapes for the future 💚

🌳 Whether along field edges, connecting woodlands, or within urban greenspaces, coppice corridors help us grow a greener, more connected Hampshire - bringing us closer to our goal of planting one million trees.

🌿🌳 Happy National Hedgerow Week! 🌳🌿
Hedgerows might look like simple boundary lines, but they are so much more. Every metre we plant includes a diverse mix of five native tree and shrub species, creating living, thriving ecosystems that play a vital role in our landscape.
From providing shelter and food for wildlife to linking remote habitats, hedgerows are nature’s highways - connecting our countryside and supporting biodiversity.
🌳 From field edges to community green spaces, every hedgerow helps us grow a greener, more connected Hampshire — bringing us closer to our goal of planting one million trees.

By recognising hedgerows as collections of trees, we can better understand their value and ensure these essential green corridors are protected and enhanced for future generations.

Join us in celebrating hedgerows this week 💚

🌿🌳 National Hedgerow Week: small features, big impact 🌳🌿
Hampshire's hedgerows are one of our most important natural assets - creating vital connections across the landscape - helping wildlife move, feed and thrive.
🐦 Hedgerows provide shelter and nesting spaces for birds
🐝 Hedgerows support pollinators with blossom and seasonal food
🦔 Hedgerows act as safe corridors linking remote habitats
🌱 Hedgerows contribute to healthier soils, carbon storage and resilient landscapes

Just like trees, hedgerows need thoughtful planning. Planting the right species, in the right place ensures they establish well and deliver long‑term benefits for both nature and people.
Now is the time to start planning for winter hedgerow and tree planting. Early preparation - from site selection to species choice - makes all the difference for successful planting.

🌳 From Strategy to Action: Bringing Elm Trees Back to Hampshire 🌳

Hampshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy sets out a county-wide vision for nature recovery - focusing effort where it can make the greatest difference for habitats, wildlife and landscape connectivity.
🔗 Explore the strategy here 👉 www.hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/nature-recovery-hampshire/hampshire-strategy

Through the Hampshire Forest Partnership, we’re helping turn this strategy into real action on the ground. One key focus is the targeted planting of disease‑resistant elm, helping restore an iconic tree lost to Dutch Elm Disease. So far, our elm trials have enabled the planting of 5,840 disease‑resistant elm trees across Hampshire, delivering measurable benefits for nature and people alike🌱
✅ Rebuilding ecological corridors
✅ Strengthening landscapes
✅ Supporting priority species - including the white‑letter hairstreak butterfly 🦋

This is what nature recovery in practice looks like:
🤝 Strategic direction 🌍 Partnership delivery 📊 Real, trackable impact

🌳 Right tree, right place: Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna🌳
Hawthorn is one of Hampshire’s most valuable native trees - and a great example of why planting the right tree in the right place matters.

🌱 Hawthorn grows happily in hedgerows, fields, parks , urban greenspaces and woodland edges. It’s tough, adaptable, and happy in a wide range of soils, making it ideal for exposed sites and community planting projects.

Hawthorn one of the most important trees for wildlife as throughout the year it supports insects, birds and small mammals:
🌼 Spring blossom provides vital nectar for pollinators
🍒 Autumn and Winter its berries (haws) are an important food source for birds
🌿 Dense growth makes excellent natural shelter and boundaries

By choosing species like hawthorn for the right locations, we’re working towards our goal of one million trees across Hampshire and helping create healthy, resilient landscapes that support biodiversity, climate resilience and community wellbeing.

🌱 Thinking about planting a Mini Forest this year? Spring is when the planning really counts. 🌱

If you’d like to create a Mini Forest for your community, now is the time to be thinking about the foundations for long‑term success.

Behind the scenes this spring, you should be thinking about:
✅ Site selection
✅ Soil and drainage assessments
✅ Mini forest design (once site has been selected)

These early checks help make sure you’re planting the right trees, in the right place - enabling your Mini Forest to establish quickly, supporting wildlife, and delivering real benefits for your community for years to come.

All of these considerations - and how to work through them step by step - are covered in our new Mini Forest Handbook. It’s designed to help communities plan confidently, avoid common pitfalls, and set their Mini Forest up to thrive.

🌳 Spring is here – trees are waking up alongside us🌳
As buds burst and leaves return on trees, many of us feel a subtle lift in our mood. Time spent around trees is closely linked to improved wellbeing, reducing stress, and helping us feel more grounded — a quiet boost to our mental wellbeing.
At the Hampshire Forest Partnership, we’re guided by the principle of planting the right tree, in the right place. This helps trees to thrive for the long term, supporting nature recovery while also creating healthier, greener spaces for people.
Equally important are the communities we work with - trees planted and cared for locally help create greener everyday spaces, where people can pause, breathe, and reconnect.
🌳🐝🌱This spring, take a moment to notice the trees around you - in your neighbourhood, parks and paths.
Walk among trees and give yourself time to breathe.
