The Mill Project is taking another important step forward.

A temporary dam is now in place across the River Itchen, creating a safe working area while we replace Wi******er City Mill’s historic sluice gate.

The sluice gate is an important part of how the Mill works with the river, making its replacement a vital step in the wider Mill Project. A temporary blue flume is maintaining a small flow of water through the mill race, allowing aquatic wildlife to move freely while the work is underway.

While the temporary dam is in place, access to the Island Garden is restricted to the seating area. We appreciate your patience while this essential work takes place.

This is another important milestone as we work towards bringing flour production back to Wi******er City Mill.

Is it cosy season yet? 🧣

We’re ready to bundle up in our favourite jumpers, warm our hands around a toasty cappuccino, tuck into a slice of cake and watch the River Itchen rush by. There’s nothing quite like a cosy afternoon at the Mill as the seasons begin to change.

💧 Did you know?

The River Itchen flows through Wi******er City Mill at an incredible rate of around 3 tonnes of water every second in summer - rising to 6 tonnes every second in winter. That's about the same weight as a small herd of elephants rushing past the mill every second! 🐘

Thanks to the River Itchen's natural chalk springs, the flow stays remarkably steady throughout the year, meaning the mill can usually keep milling even during dry spells. In fact, while many watermills had to stop during the 2022 drought, Wi******er City Mill continued turning.

Next time you visit, take a moment to watch the water racing through the mill – it's more powerful than it looks.
