Over the past 50 years, Bushfield Camp has been reclaimed by nature into a wildlife haven, supporting various priority habitats and a rich diversity of species. The site has even been designated a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and is home to species including the Hazel Dormouse, Badger, Bats, Tawny and Little Owls, Common Lizard, Fieldfare, Linnet, Bullfinch, Cinnabar Moth, Slow Worm, Woodpecker, Song Thrush, Turtle Dove, Yellowhammer, and a plethora of orchids.
The site is also cherished as a recreational space by the community of Wi******er. Numerous campaigns have been launched to protect the site as a green space, including a village green application, but unfortunately they have failed. However, we now face a daunting challenge: the threat of development that could irreversibly damage this natural haven. Our story began when the Church Commissioners submitted a planning application to Wi******er City Council, proposing to develop Bushfield Camp, a unique and cherished community green space, into a sprawling business park.
The proposed development and site allocation within the Local Plan have received a huge number of objections from local people, parish councils, and environmental and nature conservation groups. Despite the clear local opposition to the development, Wi******er City Council appears to be pushing the development through regardless!
Determined to protect Bushfield Camp for future generations, we, a group of passionate community members, have united under the banner of "Buy Back Bushfield". Our vision is clear: to fundraise and purchase the site from the Church Commissioners, and establish it as a permanent nature reserve. By doing so, we aim to preserve its valuable habitats, safeguard its biodiversity, and maintain it as a treasured community asset for years to come. We invite you to join us on this journey to protect and preserve Bushfield Camp.
