Temperatures across Hampshire are expected to reach and exceed 35°C this week, with a Red Heat-Health Alert from the UK Health Security Agency in place from Wednesday to Thursday.

This is the highest level of alert and means the heat could have serious impacts on everyone’s health – not just those who are usually considered more vulnerable.

Please take care and follow some simple steps to stay safe:

🌡️ Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm where possible and stay in the shade.
🚰 Drink plenty of water and take it easy during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear light, loose clothing, a hat and sunscreen outdoors.
🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains or blinds in sunny rooms.
🤝 Check in on neighbours, friends and family – especially older people, young children and anyone with health conditions.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a short time.

Thinking of cooling off in the water? Rivers, lakes and the sea can be dangerous, even for strong swimmers. Choose lifeguarded areas where possible, avoid alcohol and never swim alone.

Know the signs of heat illness:

⚠️ Heat exhaustion can cause dizziness, nausea and extreme thirst.
🚑 Heatstroke is an emergency. If someone becomes confused, stops sweating or has trouble breathing, call 999 immediately.

Hot weather may also affect travel, air quality and increase fire risk, so plan ahead and take extra care.

Windrush Day is commemorated annually in the UK on 22 June to honour the British Caribbean community and celebrate the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. It highlights the rich contributions of the Windrush generation to post-war Britain's economy, society, and culture.

🌿✨ Meet Nigel – our garden superstar! ✨🌿
Nigel volunteers at Bridgemary Library and has been sharing his expert landscaping knowledge to help us transform the space beneath our giant pine tree. In the past - nothing grew successfully under this tree! Thanks to his advice, we’re improving the soil so we can grow beautiful flowering plants right at the front of the library, supporting the Space for Nature project by the Greening Campaign.
We’ve already had success with spring bulbs (our first experiment!), and now we’re taking the next step—creating defined beds for perennials and seasonal plants.
Coming soon… a stumpery! We hope this cosy corner will become a welcoming habitat for hedgehogs 🦔
Want to get involved? We’d love to hear from you! Join us in supporting the garden and Space for Nature at Bridgemary ‘Green’ Library.

Happy Book Face Friday from Stubbington Library, with The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black.

'Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.'
