The team made it back to Audlem earlier today, where we were welcomed home by family and friends. ❤️

As the evenings get darker, many of us will be reaching for candles, wax melts and oil burners. But one Cheshire homeowner recently had a very near miss.

With their permission, we're sharing these photos to help others stay safe.

An unsuitable oil was used in an oil burner, causing it to spit and smoke. When water was thrown onto it, the hot oil and wax reacted, flashing and spitting across the room.

Thankfully, nobody was injured and there was no significant damage, but the incident was enough to activate the property's automatic fire alarm and alert firefighters.

The oil burner had been placed on a wooden basket, while another was sitting on a rattan coaster. Neither surface was suitable for a heat-producing item.

Stay safe this autumn:

- Always place candles, wax melts and oil burners on a heat-resistant surface
- Never leave them unattended, especially around children and pets
- Keep them away from curtains, soft furnishings and other combustible items
- Never use water on oil or wax fires

A simple mistake can quickly become a serious fire.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.

To remember all those who lost their lives, including the 343 firefighters from the New York Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice, we held a short remembrance service at Headquarters followed by a minute's silence at 1:46pm.

Firefighters and staff across Cheshire also observed a minute's silence at fire stations, while representatives from the Service attended the Civic Service of Remembrance in Chester to pay their respects alongside partner organisations and members of the community.

Today, we remember the 343 firefighters who never got to finish their shifts, along with all those who lost their lives on 11 September 2001.

25 years on, their courage, sacrifice and service are never forgotten.

On Saturday 19 September, firefighters and staff from across Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service will take on a charity stair climb challenge at Halton DCBL Stadium in Widnes.

Together, they will climb the equivalent height of the original World Trade Center, tackling 2,071 steps across 70 ascents while wearing fire kit to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Technical Fire Safety Officer Kath Harkin, who is coordinating the event, said:

"The Fire Fighters Charity supports serving and retired UK firefighters, fire and rescue service staff and their families, so it is important that we support it through fundraising events like this. We would like to thank everyone at the stadium for allowing us to use the facility, and to everyone who has donated so far. We hope to raise around £500 from the event so every little helps."

Last night, firefighters were called to Austerson after a cow became stuck in a river and was unable to get out.

Animal rescue technicians entered the water and safely rescued the cow, which was then handed over to its owner and a vet.
