Between 2011 and 2023 a serving police officer in England and Wales died by su***de every two weeks on average, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This has to change.

Our ground-breaking research in 2018 (The Job, The Life, 2018) revealed as many as one in five police are living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often due to repeated exposure to traumatic events.

With su***de rates in the general UK population at their highest point since 1999, according to the Police Federation of England & Wales, exposure to trauma in policing is increasing.

Police Care UK is a leading national charity providing clinical therapy and financial assistance to police, staff, and their families, who have experienced harm in their policing role.

Congratulations to our volunteer, Garry Smith, on receiving a Chief Constable's Commendation from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary earlier this month.

Police Sergeant Garry was recognised for his work helping deliver a new intelligence portal for the Force and supporting colleagues through training on its use.

"A very humbling day, receiving a commendation in recognition of my work," said Garry after receiving the award from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Chief Constable Alexis Boon.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic incident over the weekend in Cleveland. Especially the families and colleagues of PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades, who died in the line of duty.

These events are an important reminder of the impact of policing. Behind every emergency call, fatal collision, missing person search and traumatic incident is a police officer or member of police staff absorbing experiences that can have lasting consequences for their mental health and wellbeing.

Police Care UK received a welcome visit from some old friends last week as members of the heroic Yompathon team stopped by our offices to deliver a £1,000 donation.

Civil Nuclear Constabulary PC Adam Benfield and submariner James Mazzoni-Dalton took on a six-week, 3,863 miles non-stop march across Britain in autumn 2022 to raise money for eight emergency service and military charities, including Police Care UK.

They were part of an eight-strong team of former and serving front-line emergency service and military personnel whose efforts raised more than £12,000 at the time.

Since then their charity has been raising money for charities with a specific focus on those supporting mental health of people like them.

‘Psychological services should be Police Care UK’s priority.’

That was the clear message from more than 2,100 serving and veteran police officers, staff, and family members who took part in our 2025 Service Demand Survey.

91% said they or a loved one had experienced harm through policing, while 53% said trauma had a major impact on their lives.

In response, last year we delivered over 5,000 therapy sessions, expanded our Clinical Services, and broadened our Financial Assistance Grants Programme.

Police Care UK volunteers put in a marathon effort as they appeared at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month.

Regular supporters Andy Fairie and Gary Mackie spent EIGHT DAYS between them at the largest multi-sport event to be held in the UK this year.

The pair went the extra ‘four-minute' mile as they hosted a Police Care UK awareness stand at Clyde Gateway in Dalmarnock - Police Scotland’s staging post for the police and security operation.

Andy and Gary, who himself attended seven days, ensured the stand in the exhibitors hall was manned for all but three of the 11 days of competition.

Moving into further or higher education can be an exciting next step. But for young people from police families affected by harm, the financial pressures that often come with education can add extra challenges at an already demanding time.

Costs such as course fees, books, equipment and travel can quickly add up, making it harder to access opportunities and focus on learning.

Our Education Bursaries are available to eligible young people aged 16 and over. They are designed to help ease financial pressure, support wellbeing and confidence, and enable young people to make the most of their educational opportunities.
