Social Care Future is about communities where we look out for one another. When life changes – when someone we love needs care – the risk of isolation is real. But it doesn't have to be.

When Gordon's wife Anne went into a care home four years ago, his daughter was determined he wouldn't sit indoors. She found Wokingham Link Visiting Scheme and got him involved in Link Thursdays at All Saints Church.

"It just clicked. It really did," Gordon said.

Now, at 91, Gordon has activities most days of the week. Link Thursdays, Sedero Lounge Mondays, bowling with friends, the Gentlemen's Friendship Group on Fridays.

"I've ended up being involved on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. And I think that's the important thing," Gordon said.

He's rebuilt a life with purpose, connection, and people who know his name. He sees familiar faces each week. He has something to do and someone to talk to.

"As long as I can keep coming here, going to the coffee mornings and doing a bit of bowls, I'll keep going," Gordon said.

Part of everyday life in Wokingham, Elms Field is a place to play, meet, grab a coffee, go to the cinema, pick up the groceries, walk the dog or just stop for a while.

From everyday moments to larger events and festivals, it’s a space used throughout the year. It’s one part of the wider regeneration of the town centre.

Work started this week on improved footpaths at Ashenbury Park, Woodley.

These photos show the progress already being made on site since Monday 15 June.

Take a look at the final image to see how the routes link across the park.

There will be some temporary disruption while this continues, but access is being kept open where possible. 🚧 Thank you for your patience.

The improvements will link the park to Aldermoors Local Nature Reserve, Waingels Road and Beggars Hill Road, as well as creating a one mile circular route around the park 🌿

The paths are being built with a solid base and rolled gravel surface, like those at Dinton Pastures Country Park.

The programme is expected to take around four to six weeks.

Hot weather is on the way, so bin collections may take place earlier than usual to help crews avoid the peaks of the heat.

From Monday 22 June, put bins out the night before and keep lids closed where possible, especially for food waste containers.

Thanks for helping crews carry out collections safely in the heat.

In the heat, stay hydrated, keep homes shaded during the day and look out for others around you. 🌡️

Introducing our new mayor 👏

Cllr Rob Comber has been elected as the new Mayor of Wokingham Borough.

As Mayor, he will act as the borough’s ‘first citizen’, representing our communities at events and presiding over council meetings.

For his mayoral year, he has chosen to support Daisy's Dream, a charity that helps children and young people facing bereavement. 🩷

“I have chosen Daisy’s Dream because of the incredibly important work they do,” he said. “Facing bereavement as a child or young person is incredibly difficult and the support Daisy’s Dream provides is invaluable.”

Cllr Comber takes over from Cllr Carol Jewell, having served as her deputy last hear. His deputy will be Cllr Melanie De Jong. 🤝

Meet Georgina, who has run Antique Rose Boutique for more than 15 years. Her boutique now sits right on the corner overlooking Peach Place - but where the plaza stands today was once a car park.

"How can you compare a car park to this lovely Plaza?"

And she's right. Today, Peach Place is somewhere people actually want to be.

"If you've ever been here in the summer, you'll know that it's just full of life - children running around, people enjoying the sunshine. For us, that is just what Wokingham should be about," says Georgina.

Peach Place opened in April 2019 and has been at the heart of the town centre ever since - a pedestrianised square where people come to shop, eat, meet and spend time together.

Got a little adventurer? Bring them along to a free family-friendly bike ride on Sunday 28 June! 🧒

Kidical Mass organisers are leading 1 mile (balance bike), 2.5 mile and 4 mile routes as part of Wokingham Bikeathon.

No need to book - just turn up at Cantley Park event field for 10am. 🚴

It's fully led and marshalled, though parents and carers remain responsible at all times.

Our My Journey Wokingham team will also be hosting their first Wokingham Cycle Festival during the event. 🥳

There'll be jaw-dropping displays by Fusion Extreme BMX stunt team, free walking and cycling advice and loads more.

The Bikeathon is a volunteer-led event which we support, and proceeds go to good local causes.

We’re celebrating 15 years of transforming Wokingham town centre. 📢

Our award-winning regeneration was set out in the Town Centre Masterplan, a 15-year vision shaping Wokingham through to 2026. 🔮

From the creation of Elms Field, Peach Place and Carnival Hub to improvements to transport, leisure and public spaces, we'll be looking back at how the town has changed. 🔎

Did you visit any of the recent events at Elms Field? From festivals to family fun, there’s been plenty happening, including:

• 🌸 Spring Back to Wokingham - run in partnership with Wokingham Town Council
•🌶️ Chilli Hop Cider Festival - run by Zoom Events
• 🎉 Party in the Park - run by Wokingham Town Council
• 🛍️ Wokingham May Fayre - run by Wokingham Lions Club

Prior to the regeneration, Elms Field was an underused area. Now it’s a lively, welcoming space for communities to come together for socialising and attending these great events. 🫶
