Ashmore Park Nursery Ashmore Park is a place where adults and children learn together. For more information please visit our website: www.ashmoreparknurseryschool.co.uk

Therefore, we firmly believe that we have to work in partnership with parents/carers in order to achieve our hopes and aspirations for our children. It is our belief that all children have an innate desire to learn and that it is our responsibility as educators to nurture this desire for learning in an environment that provides rich opportunities for adults and children to learn together.

We are delighted to be featured in an article by Debi Keyte-Hartland about the importance of giving young children opportunities to think and express their ideas through different materials, or ‘languages’. Last year, the children in Natalie’s full-time group explored the question, ‘What lives with us in the nursery garden?’ Their investigation developed into a project mapping the garden and the creatures that lived there. The children identified the creatures’ homes, represented them through drawings and paintings, and added these to the map so others could find them. The project continued for most of the school year, reflecting our belief that slowing down young children’s learning allows educators to support deeper, more developed thinking, knowledge and skills.

This week many of the children have been harvesting the pumpkins that were planted last summer. The children have been in the back garden looking at the pumpkins and picking them and then investigating them by looking, touching, and talking about them. We wanted the children to look closely and talk about what they noticed before representing what they observed on paper with the watercolours so, we created a collection of pumpkins with different shapes sizes and colours for the children to observe, talk about and represent.

We would like to say a big thank you for all your lovely gifts and kind words. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness as we end this school year. During our last week together, the children have harvested the potatoes, carrots and peas that they planted earlier in the term. The excitement and wonder of what has been growing under the soil truly amazes the children. We have cooked the potatoes, mashed them and ate them too. Having opportunities to grow food, nurture plants and harvest is very important to us as we see it as helping our children learn about nature and how important it is to care for the environment.

As part of our last day together the staff and children have enjoyed a picnic together as a way of celebrating our time together and the end of the school year. Also, today marks the end of many families nursery education with us and so we would like to say that we have enjoyed working with both you and your children and we wish them all a smooth transition into their new schools in September. Good luck everyone and keep in touch.

Over the past two weeks the families of the children leaving Ashmore Park Nursery School have visited Kingswood outdoor learning centre. This is an opportunity for a parent to spend the day with their child enjoying all that nature has to offer us. We use school fund and trip donations to help fund this visit and this year we have been very lucky to be nominated by Bains Nisa Local for a charitable donation of £250 from the charity Making a Difference Locally (MADL) which we have used towards the cost of the visit.

The 'Making a Difference Locally' (MADL) charity helps independent retailers such as Bains Nisa Local raise money that can then be donated to local charities and good causes within the community.

We would like to thank all the staff at Bains Nisa Local for supporting our community and for nominating us for this generous donation. We hope that our families will continue to support this local independently run convenience store, which is at the heart of our community, and YOUR community.

We have had a delivery of caterpillar larvae in nursery and the children have been curious as to what was in the pots when they first arrived. We have been observing closely the changes, and the caterpillars are now fully grown, and some are now chrysalides. Over the next week we hope that the butterflies will emerge and then we will release them into the nursery garden. To evolve the children’s knowledge of the life cycle of a butterfly they have been looking closely and drawing what they notice. The skill of noticing features such as the shape of the body and the legs and then transferring what has been observed on to paper takes time to develop. As part of our approach, we support children’s drawing over time as we value children’s opportunities to express what they have learnt, share their ideas and have opportunities to talk about what they have drawn.

Over the school year we draw children’s attention to pattern. It begins with patterns on clothing e.g. spots, stripes etc. and develops over the year so that children become familiar with the concept of repeating patterns. Currently the children are discussing, imitating and creating repeating patterns. We offer a range of materials for children to investigate and learn about repeating patterns like natural materials, loose parts and paint. Mathematics is all about patterns, so it is important that we sensitise the children to patterns and work with them to evolve this knowledge.

Our project this year around ‘what lives in the nursery garden’ has gone in many different directions depending on the interests of the group. The children in Natalie’s group have been very interested in maps and map making so, Natalie has worked with this fascination to map out where the insects live in the front garden. The children have investigated where the insects are located in the garden and then using this knowledge have drawn their own maps of where the insects can be found. The maps show the children’s thinking processes about what maps are used for as well as representing the living things in our garden. Representing ideas in many different ways is an important part of the children’s learning processes and they have been using blocks and other materials to create three dimensional maps too.

The older nursery children have started to use the Bikeability bikes in the nursery garden. The children have enjoyed using them and have listened really carefully to the instructions on what to do with the bike. Using balance bikes helps the children’s coordination, stability and core strength which helps with many areas of their development. We will continue with weekly sessions on the balance bikes until the end of term. We would like to say a big thank you to the Bikeability charity for providing us with the balance bikes, the helmets and the training so our children can have these opportunities.

All our children have opportunities to engage in role play as it is vital for child development as it supports both thinking skills and social, emotional, and physical development. By mimicking real-life or imagined scenarios, children improve communication, enhance creativity, develop empathy, and refine fine motor skills in a safe environment. Both the café and the domestic play areas offer our children these opportunities on a daily basis and hopefully you can see how engaged and motivated the children are.
