Extreme heat affects wildlife as well as people. During this weekโs heatwave, simple actions can make a real difference around Smestow Valley and in your garden.
โข Provide water for wildlife - shallow dishes of clean water help birds, hedgehogs and insects stay hydrated.
โข Top up garden ponds - many dry out quickly in high temperatures.
โข Leave areas of shade - logs, shrubs and long grass give animals cooler places to rest.
โข Avoid disturbing wildlife - many species reduce activity to conserve energy.
Trees and woodland areas across Smestow Valley also play an important role in cooling the landscape, reducing temperatures beneath the canopy and offering vital refuge for people and wildlife. Please take extra care on the reserve this week and help us protect the species that share it with us.
