To commemorate 100 years of No. 605 (County of Warwick) Squadron, guests attending our Centenary celebrations last weekend received a special commemorative coin, marking this significant milestone in the Squadron’s proud history.

The coin pays tribute to two iconic aircraft flown by 605 Sqn during its distinguished service: the Hawker Hurricane and the de Havilland Mosquito.

A lasting memento of a century of service, sacrifice and achievement, honouring the Squadron’s rich heritage as we continue to build on its legacy for the next 100 years.

To conclude our Centenary Day celebrations, which brought together VIPs, veterans, serving personnel, their families, employers and members of the wider community, we gathered for a wonderful formal dinner in the WO’s & Sgt’s Mess.

The evening provided an opportunity to reflect on 605 Squadron’s remarkable 100-year history, while also looking ahead to the future. A number of inspirational guest speakers shared fascinating insights into the experiences and achievements of former Squadron members, alongside their thoughts and aspirations for the next chapter of our story.

The evening also provided a fitting opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding efforts, dedication and achievements of our personnel. We are immensely proud of all of this year’s deserving award recipients:

🏆 PTVR of the Year Award
Awarded to a team or individual for outstanding service, attitude, commitment, or a particularly worthy act.

🏳 Squadron Commander’s Pennant
Presented to Officer Commanding 605 Sqn by Air Officer Commanding No. 2 Group.

🎖️ Volunteer Reserves Service Medal (VRSM)
Awarded to members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force who have completed 10 years of reckonable service and met the required efficiency criteria, including earning a training bounty in at least 9 of those 10 years.

Awarded to Squadron personnel whose actions and efforts have merited special recognition, demonstrating outstanding commitment, determination, enthusiasm, a “can-do” attitude and exceptional co-operation in the completion of their duties, tasks or events.

The second phase of our Centenary celebrations focused on a poignant Sunset Ceremony, held outside the WOs & Sgt’s Mess ahead of our formal Centenary Dinner.

A Sunset Ceremony is an important Act of Remembrance, most commonly held to commemorate the Battle of Britain and honour “The Few” — the pilots and aircrew who fought, and in many cases made the ultimate sacrifice, during the summer of 1940. It is also used to mark significant military anniversaries and other important occasions.

We were honoured to welcome the RAF Cosford Voluntary Band, who provided a superb rendition of Evening Hymn and Sunset, adding real poignancy to the ceremony. 🫡

OC 605 Sqn took position on the dais to receive the salute, while Sgt Kieran and AS1 Jake did an excellent job of lowering and folding the Ensign with precision and dignity.

Following the ceremony, guests made their way into the Mess for a group photograph before the evening celebrations officially commenced.

The first part of our Centenary celebrations on Saturday brought together an incredibly diverse group of guests, including VIPs and dignitaries, former members of 605 Sqn, family members of those who have previously served, Squadron historians, employers of Reservists, and the families of our current PTVRs.

The afternoon began with our VIP guests signing the Squadron Visitors’ Book, before the unveiling of our Centenary plaque by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire and Air Officer Commanding No.2 Group.

Guests were then given an insight into the capabilities of the modern-day Squadron through a Capability Demonstration, showcasing the wide range of professions and skills our people bring to 605 Sqn and the RAF.

Guests received an inspiring presentation from AS1 Ant, who shared his incredible experiences as an RAF Reservist, including how his Reserve service fits alongside his family life and civilian career. His story provided a powerful insight into the opportunities, challenges and rewards of serving in the RAF Reserves.

The afternoon continued with a fascinating presentation from Mr Mike Wynne, a former 605 Sqn PTVR with our RAF Police Flight, who delivered a detailed account of the Squadron’s remarkable history and its journey through the past 100 years.

From our heritage and traditions to the people who continue to shape our future, the afternoon was a fitting reflection of what 605 Squadron has represented for a century — service, commitment and a legacy that continues to evolve.

Today, 5th October 2026, we celebrate the Centenary of No. 605 (County of Warwick) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force — a century of service, sacrifice, courage and commitment.

From its formation in 1926, through the defining moments of our nation’s history, to the Squadron we are today, generations of men and women have stood together under the 605 banner.

Aircraft, technology and the challenges of the world may have changed, but the spirit of the Squadron has endured.
