Worcester Music Library has now moved into the Elgar School of Music. It has proved to be quite a challenge, but we are almost done - here is some of the orchestral and chamber music (A-M) in the Lumby Room at the school, which we have set up during half-term.

We'd like to use this platform to say thanks to Severn Arts for hosting us while the library was homeless since pre-COVID, and also Worcester Theatres for providing a room in Huntingdon Hall to temporarily accommodate our overflow while we make space for it.

Here are some more excess scores available to any musical organisation that wants them.

These are vocal scores for Strauss Die Fledermaus (in English); there are two sets, one translated by Chris Hassall, one by Ronald Hanmer; there are 50 of each.

Please let us know if you are interested - we have no room for them.

We are still in the process of trimming down some of the (over-subscribed) pieces in our collection. I'm delighted to say that we found a good home for Carmina Burana, so if anyone would like to provide the same for any of these three pieces we would be very pleased to hear from you:

Kodaly MISSA BREVIS (70 copies)
Puccini MESSA DI GLORIA (60 copies)
Williamson MASS OF CHRIST THE KING (50 copies)

The music library is gradually emigrating from Malvern Gate. Just about all of the choral music, apart from some compilation volumes, is now housed at the Elgar School of Music.

Now the school doesn't have enough space to house everything, so we have decided to cull some pieces. So where we have, say, 200+ copies of a piece we will try to run them down to, say, 120.

One example is Carmina Burana. We have 100 spare copies - all in good condition. If there is a choir or school which would like to have some or all of them, and is prepared to collect them, then please let us know.

Happy New Year everyone. The library is still chugging along, although as you may imagine we have had as many cancellations as orders over the last 12 months. The best way to contact us is via email to [email protected]

Please also use this means if you have music to return from last term, as we still have to make appointments to see borrowers or returners.

Orders have started coming in from choirs ... hurrah! We cannot just wander in and out of the building housing most of the music, so would appreciate a bit of notice of any new orders.

There are many hundreds of books still in limbo because of the pandemic restrictions on travel and meetings and we will need to manually confirm that the books requested are actually available. Fortunately all the current orders are.

Let's be positive! Many musical organisations will be planning to get back together for rehearsal for the autumn term, and there will be such a release of emotion when that happens.

The Worcester Music Library is not 'open' yet but we can at least take orders from Choirs, Orchestral Groups, schools and festivals for later in the year. We would anticipate a swell in demand for certain pieces and so would recommend you get in touch as soon as you know your programmes so that we can earmark the parts for you.

The picture below shows the Finzi Music Library, which is now held at the Elgar School of Music.

17/07/2020

The Music Library will remain closed until at least September 1st, which is the date that Severn Arts are planning on re-opening.

We are by no means clear what types of performances will be permitted for the rest of this year; there may be some loosening of restrictions, but it is not looking too likely. The best we can expect is concerts for relatively small groups, in front of limited crowds, in venues that will permit them.

This horrible situation will not last for ever, so let's be optimistic. If you would like to order music for next year, or at least express an interest, we can earmark it for you now. Just email your request to [email protected]

Best wishes to you all

Well, the Music Library is 'working from home' - as best we can! We have had three recent orders for September, by when everyone hopes things will be back to (relatively) normal.

If you are planning your programme for 2020/21, you can browse a digest of what we have here https://www.severnarts.org.uk/worcester-music-library/.

Please email [email protected] for any orders or queries and we will pick your messages up 'from home'.

Just a reminder to choirs and orchestras who have pieces from the collection that they may not now need: please can you hold on to them until we know when 'normal' happens again, i.e. until we can open.

Best wishes to you all - and just imagine what it will fell like when we can all meet again ... and perform.

17/03/2020

Hello everyone. We are closing the music library until after Easter. All of the choirs and orchestras that were planning on collecting from us over the next three have cancelled their concerts anway, so no-one should be affected.

If you have managed to actually stage a concert and wish to return the music, please can you hang on to it for now while we assess the situation.

We have convinced ourselves that things will have improved by the autumn term, so please do make enquiries about possible borrowing to [email protected] and your message will be picked up.

Thanks for reading, stay well. What a foul year this has been so far.

There is now a page on the Severn Arts website which advertises the music library, which is now settled in their building at Malvern Gate: https://www.severnarts.org.uk/worcester-music-library/

It contains links to our orchestral and choral catalogues which give an overview of what we have (though not all the detail about arrangements, editions etc).

There is also an indication of our new charges, which come into force in January 2020. We have had to increase these because our rent is going to increase. The charges have not changed for over ten years. Our home page on the Elgar School website is also being changed to reflect this.
