It's VOLUNTEER WEEK this week! 🤝
As a charity, we an amazing group of volunteers from far and wide who bring an array of skills and knowledge that support us with tasks across our site.
Here's why our Lead Dog Walking Group Volunteer, Amy, came to us and what she enjoys about getting involved. If you fancy having a go, visit www.storibrymbo.co.uk/get-involved
"I’ve been volunteering with Stori Brymbo since 2018, when I first got involved with the Fossil Forest project. With a background in archaeology, I was fascinated by the site’s internationally important fossil heritage and the chance to develop skills that overlap with palaeontology. What started as an interest in the science quickly became much more than that.
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in all sorts of activities, from excavation and interpretation work in the Fossil Forest to supporting educational visits, public engagement events and community activities. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most is helping visitors and students discover the stories behind Brymbo’s heritage and seeing their enthusiasm when they make connections with the site’s fascinating past.
Volunteering has also given me opportunities I never expected. Through Stori Brymbo I’ve represented the organisation at the National Eisteddfod, helped introduce new audiences to Brymbo’s unique history, supported events such as Brymbo Rocks, and become involved with the dog walking group, helping organise community activities including a successful dog show. Every experience has allowed me to meet new people, learn something new and build connections within the local community.
As someone who wasn’t originally from North Wales, volunteering has given me a real appreciation for the area’s history, culture and heritage. It’s helped me feel more connected to the place I now call home and given me opportunities to learn about local traditions, communities and stories that I might otherwise never have encountered.
For me, volunteering is about being part of something worthwhile. It’s a chance to share knowledge, help preserve and celebrate Brymbo’s remarkable story, support others in discovering their local heritage, and contribute to a welcoming community that has given me so much over the last eight years. I’ve made lasting friendships, developed new skills and had experiences I never imagined when I first signed up to help at the Fossil Forest. I’m proud to be part of Stori Brymbo and excited to see what the future holds."
