Supporting children with characteristics of autism

This course provides staff with an understanding of the full range of ways that Autism might be displayed in a young child.

Aim: For attendees to develop the knowledge and confidence to identify key indicators and know which interventions will be helpful.

Content:
An overview of Autistic Spectrum Conditions, including:
• Diagnostic Criteria
• How girls may present differently from boys
• The importance of early interventions, including
o Ways to reduce anxiety
o Developing play skills
o Developing social communication skills
o Developing language
• Understanding and addressing sensory-related behaviours
• Changing behaviours

Makaton – Level 1

A practical and fun introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. Participants will learn signs and symbols from stages 1-2 (Level 1) and additional of the Core Vocabulary. Signs and symbols taught in Level 1 include ‘Family Members’, ‘Food and drink’, ‘The Home’, ‘Transport’, ‘Greetings’ and basic Action and Describing words.

WCBC Rainbow Childcare Funding Panel Submission Dates Guidance 2026

Below are the significant submission dates for the Rainbow Childcare Funding Panel in order to have placements to be set up prior to commencement.

Holiday funding applications

May Half Term
May half term starts on 25/05/2026. Holiday funding applications should be submitted by 01/05/2026 for the application to be heard at Panel on 18/05/2026.

Summer Holiday
Summer Holiday starts on 21/07/2026. Holiday funding applications should be submitted by 01/06/2026 for the application to be heard at Panel on 15/06/2026.

October Half Term
Summer Holiday starts on 26/10/2026. Holiday funding applications should be submitted by 01/09/2026 for the application to be heard at Panel on 21/09/2026.

Term time funding applications

Autumn term starts on 01/09/2026. Term time funding applications should be submitted by 01/07/2027 for the application to be heard at Panel on 20/07/2026.

Any funding applications that are not submitted in time for the relevant Rainbow Panels will not be heard at Panel and funding will not be awarded for the relevant period applied for.

EARLY YEARS AND CHILDCARE FUNDING APPLICATION PACK

The Early Years and Childcare Small Capital Grant application process is now available.

Application pack and guidance documents can now be requested via the childcare team.

Settings may request support from their Childcare Officer to help them to make an appropriate application. For support with your application, email on [email protected]

The closing date for applications will be 12pm on 18/05/2026

Please read all guidance thoroughly prior to considering making an application.

Statement on Meningitis outbreak in Kent

“While meningococcal disease is rare, it can become very serious quickly. Recent surveillance data show that cases in Wales remain relatively low, with 18 notifications of meningococcal disease reported in 2023 and 19 reported in 2024.

Just to remind all childcare settings that the deadline for the SASS to be submitted to CIW, through the online portal is the 27 March 2026.

The SASS must be completed by all settings, this includes childminders, sessional day care, out of school care, open access play provision, as well as full day care.
