We are delighted to be working in partnership with Preserve Penley Hospital

For over 10 years, Claire Lewis-Black has been researching and promoting the history of the former Polish Hospital and the Polish community in Penley. Her knowledge, research and dedication are proving invaluable to the Polish Heritage Penley Project.

Through this partnership, we look forward to preserving, celebrating and sharing Penley's unique Polish heritage, ensuring that the stories and legacy of this remarkable community continue to inspire future generations.

81 years ago today the United States Army Medical Corps from the 129th General Hospital at Penley presented the US flag (the one that had flown over Penley) to the Borough of Wrexham to be laid up in St Giles Parish church in gratitude for the towns hospitality.

On Monday 16th July 1945 some 400 officers, nurses and enlisted men from the 129th General Hospital paraded through Wrexham from Bodhyfred to St Giles Church for a short and impressive service, met by the Mayor & Mayoress and civic dignitaries.

The Stars & Stripes and brass plaque can still be seen in St Giles Church Wrexham. The plaque bearing the inscription 'Presented to the town of Wrexham with gratitude for its hospitality, 129th General Hospital US Army. Haec olim meminisse juvabit" I took some photos of the flags and plaque at St Giles below.

Col Blount officer commanding at Penley said,
"At Penley this flag flew over what was, through your courtesy, a little bit of US territory in Wales. During the last twelve months these Stars & Stripes have seen nearly 10,000 battle casualties enter and leave Penley. It is felt that no more fitting a shelter should be found for these colours than here in Wrexham Parish Church.

That is a photo of my mum Staff Kay Lewis pouring a drink for WW2 Polish Veterans whose home was Penley Hospital Wrexham & in most cases their family became the very NHS staff caring for them.

Calling all Penley staff, do you have memories or stories of life at Penley that you would like preserved in perpetuity for future generations or even have photos to share?
