The wildlife value of private gardens, both commercial, and domestic

The total area of private gardens in England is roughly equivalent in size to the county of Somerset. This is larger than the total area of all designated nature reserves.

Parks and public garden spaces have received in recent years a lot of very welcome attention in terms of what has loosely been called “rewilding “,….wildflower planting, not mowing all or part of grassed areas, woodland and hedgerow planting etc. This is all very welcome, and goes with the big moral shift in public attitude and awareness since 2020, but how much actual wildlife value is there in these “rewilded” areas?

Award success at Chelsea: HTA and APL members triumph with their dedication to excellence

Members of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), including its specialist group of landscapers and designers, the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), have triumphed at Chelsea with an impressive medal haul as well as prestigious awards for Best in Show, Best Construction, and the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year.

Over 50 member businesses have been recognised for their excellence at this year's show, for garden construction, exhibits, or by providing a range of services and products to bring the displays to life. HTA members are behind three-quarters of this year’s show gardens, and of the 17 plants shortlisted for the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2026, 13 were either supplied or exhibited by HTA members.

Our teams were back at Crown Place in Norwich today, as part of their annual maintenance schedule. Within the internal relaxation areas for the students, there were these amazing blue Hosta. Hosta being flanked with various ferns, in this difficult area, due to being surrounded on all sides with verticals walls of up to 8 floors high.
