Stinging nettles might not be everyone’s favourite plant, but they are vital for our wildlife. These plants are an important nursery for many butterflies 🦋
In this photo, you can see a group of Peacock caterpillars feeding and on a patch of stinging nettles at Hollywater Meadows SANG. These striking black, spiky caterpillars rely on nettles as their main food source, and without them, we wouldn’t see the stunning butterflies.
By leaving patches of nettles to grow, we’re helping support local biodiversity and giving these incredible insects a chance to thrive.
So next time you see nettles, remember – they’re not just a nuisance, they’re a lifeline for nature! 💚

After our recent posts about temperatures rising and the risk of wildfires, we were very saddened to hear that one of our pony lookers found evidence of a barbeque at NNR this morning. The vegetation had been scorched and alongside was litter which had been strewn across the area.

Please do not light barbeques in the open countryside. The potential for them getting out of control is high and the resulting damage can be devastating. Even a small spark from a BBQ can ignite dry grass and heather.

Leave barbeques at home - pack a picnic instead. And please take your litter home with you.

An Amber Heat Health Alert is in place this week, and hot, dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires. Even a small spark from a BBQ can ignite dry grass.

🔥Be Wildfire Alert!

As temperatures rise please help protect the beautiful countryside and keep everyone safe by following these simple steps.

🚭Don’t drop ci******es and make sure they are put out properly.

🚮Take your litter home.

🚫No Fires or Barbecues are permitted on County Council Nature Reserves or in any part of the New Forest National Park. Only light fires or barbecues if there are designated areas and use the facilities provided such as our bookable Country Park barbecue hearths. https://www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/countryside/visit/bbq

🚫Don’t leave campfires or barbecues unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.

📞If you spot a fire, call 999 immediately. Don’t attempt to tackle fires.

Give a map or What3Words reference if possible, otherwise give a landmark such as a farm or pub to help locate the fire.

Let’s all do our part to prevent wildfires.
