T H E C A S T L E H O U S E

Tucked beside St Andrew’s Church within the beautiful estate, Castle House is a remarkable 13th century building, traditionally believed to have been a residence for chantry priests. Historic England notes, however, that it was probably built as a dower house for Dame Joan Sydenham.

A few beautiful facts about this extraordinary building:
🏛️ Grade I listed - recognised for its exceptional architectural and historic importance
🕰️ Dating from the the 13th century, with significant refurbishment in the early 17th century

🌿 Dame Joan Sydenham is closely connected with its history; she acquired Brympton through marriage and the Castle House is understood to have served as her dower house.

🔥 Inside are wonderfully preserved historic details, including timber-framed partitions, an impressive stone newel staircase, ancient fireplaces and an open-framed roof structure

🍎 Its later history is just as fascinating - by the early 18th century, the building had been used as stabling, and it later became a museum with a particular emphasis on Somerset’s cider-making heritage.

And today, surrounded by the gardens of Brympton House, it provides one of the beautiful ceremony space options🤍

The Great Hall at Brympton House has been at the heart of the house for centuries.

Originally an Elizabethan gathering space, this was a room made for grand entrances, important guests, feasting and celebration.

Its great mullioned windows, historic fireplace and timber details still speak to the room’s past - a reminder that Brympton was evolving through the Tudor and Elizabethan age while retaining its much older medieval roots.

Today, the Great Hall still does what it was built to do: bring people together.

Only now, the feasting has a rather different menu… 🥂

Tucked away in the estate is the enchanting St Andrew’s Church, with origins dating back to the 13th century ⛪️

A wonderfully atmospheric church, it has so much character and history - including its bells, which can still be rung and a lovely organ inside 🎶

It’s also been recognised among the Top 100 prettiest churches in Britain and it’s easy to see why. Surrounded by the historic landscape of Brympton House, St Andrew’s is a truly special place where centuries of history, architecture and music come together.

Before the gardens we know today, the boating lake was already a place for quiet pleasure, reflection and country-house life.

This wonderful old photograph takes us back to the late Victorian and early Edwardian period at Brympton - a time of summer house parties, elegant dress, leisurely afternoons and boats drifting across the water beneath the terrace.

The lake sits below the south front of Brympton House, its waters reflecting the architecture and gardens. A boathouse and ornamental island formed part of this beautiful setting.

And then, as now, there was something rather magical about seeing Brympton from the water!

A bar, a snooker room… and a little bit of Hollywood 🎬🥂

Before the Library Bar was the place for your guests to settle in with a glass of something lovely before the ceremony, these rooms had a very different life.

The oak-panelled Library Bar was just that - a library - while the Morning Room was a place to retreat and relax.

Fast forward a few centuries and they make one of our favourite spots for the pre-ceremony part of the wedding day. Guests arrive, drinks are poured, everyone gets settled… and there’s that lovely feeling that the day is about to begin!

And if the rooms look a little familiar, there’s a reason…

🎬 Scenes from Chocolat, featuring Jonny Depp, were filmed here at Brympton House, adding another little layer to the story of these already rather special rooms.

And that’s what we love about weddings at Brympton - you’re stepping into centuries of history, stories, characters and memories… and then adding your own chapter.

Not a bad place to start a wedding day, is it?

There’s something unforgettable about arriving at Brympton House as the evening light begins to glow. Built from beautiful honey-coloured Ham stone, the West Front comes alive at golden hour, with every window, arch and carved detail catching the last bit of the evening sun.

It’s the very first view that welcomes your guests as they arrive - an entrance that never fails to make an impression. St Andrew’s Church

Tucked beside the beautiful Brympton House is St. Andrew’s Church, a place where over 800 years of history lives on.

Built in the 13th century by the d’Evercy family, this church has witnessed medieval knights, Tudor landowners, the Reformation, and centuries of village life.

Inside you’ll find:
⚔️ Medieval stone effigies of knights, ladies and even a priest who lived during the time of the Black Death
🕊️ A 14th-century font that has welcomed generations through baptism
✨ Beautiful fragments of medieval stained glass and elegant Dutch brass chandeliers
🪦 The magnificent tomb of Sir John Sydenham (1626), one of the church’s most remarkable monuments

Unlike many English churches, St Andrew’s escaped major Victorian restoration, meaning much of what you see today is wonderfully authentic.

It’s no surprise this church is listed as a Grade I building - and is one of England’s most important historic churches.

Writers have long admired its atmosphere. Arthur Mee described Brympton as “this little paradise, which breaks upon us suddenly,” with the church included in lists of England’s finest churches.
