"Residents and businesses should not have to accept declining standards in our town centres as the new normal.

Yeovil is a great town with a proud history, strong businesses and a fantastic community. We should be doing everything possible to make the town centre a place where people want to shop, work and spend their time."

Concerns about anti-social behaviour, street drinking and begging in Yeovil town centre have prompted calls for stronger action and effective enforcement powers to support local businesses and visitors.

10/08/2026

Concerned about reports of street drinking, anti-social behaviour and begging in Yeovil town centre, Cllr Tom Power asked Somerset Council whether the relevant Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) were still in force.

The Liberal Democrat administration confirmed that the PSPOs have lapsed and have not been renewed. They also stated that they have not received reports from the public or partner agencies that would support the need to reapply for a PSPO in Yeovil town centre, despite concerns being raised by local businesses and residents.

We need to be tougher on crime and anti-social behaviour and send a clear message that behaviour which blights our town and village centres will not be tolerated.

Great to catch up with fellow Cllr Tom Power at the Halfway House in Langport. (Some of the best conversations really do happen down the pub!)

As our Opposition Lead Member for Communities, Environment and Climate Change, Tom has a wide-ranging portfolio. It was good to discuss the work Somerset Council is doing in these areas and where there are opportunities to improve services and deliver better outcomes for residents.

Always useful to take the time to share ideas, challenge thinking and look ahead.
