Earlier this evening the Archbishop of York blessed the new Quire Ramp.

These photos perfectly encapsulate the two sides of the York Minster coin:

On one side the incredible team who work behind the scenes to ensure this cathedral is not only conserved with care, but continues to evolve to meet the needs of each generation.

They built this ramp over 4 months, with early mornings to minimise the noise impact on daily life, worship, and our visitors. Many of us would come into work not realising that the masons had already been at work for hours.

On the other side of the coin, this work sets the stage for the beautiful acts of worship cherished here for 1,399 years. The Choir of York Minster, Vergers, Servers and Clergy work alongside our Visitor Experience Team to ensure that everyone has the chance to experience something special within our walls.

Our thanks to all who contribute towards the richness of life at York Minster, and special thanks to the Friends of York Minster for enabling this work to happen.

An evening of celebration and pride as we marked the incredible achievement and commitment of York’s graduates at the West Offices Graduation Centre.

Every learner who had earned a certificate, diploma or foundation degree was honoured.
It’s not easy learning when you are balancing family life, household duties, caring responsibilities and work.

Lovely to hear from past learners and hear about some of the ambitions of our new graduates.

Reassuring to know that the future of teaching, business and social care is in their compassionate hands.

Fabulous evening with GLL Sport Foundation celebrating our amazing athletes at the LNER Community Stadium Awards went to athletes from 16 different sports aged between 11 and 66, many of whom have already represented our city on the national stage and our country on the world stage.

It was inspiring hearing their stories and the competitions they were involved with. We are really looking forward to hearing more about these talented people as their careers continue to blossom.

We marked the start of Refugee Week with a visit to the Friends Meeting House, York for the Courage, Community and Conversation event organised by University of York Migration Network.

We learnt more about the work of many charities and organisations that offer support, not just to refugees but many others in need including: Time To Be Out, York Interfaith, Specialist Training and Employment Programme (STEP),York Human Rights, York Social Prescriber, Friends of the Earth, York City of Sanctuary, Refugee Action York and many others.

What an absolute honour to take part in the 21 Gun Salute in the Museum Gardens to mark the King’s Official Birthday.

Huge thanks to the Saluting Troop - 4th Regiment Royal Artillery and the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Not forgetting the Sea Cadets, the Army Cadets and the Royal Air Force Cadets and their amazing commanding officers. And everybody who worked so hard to make this such a memorable day.

Great evening at the Best Bar None Awards, hearing about York’s night time economy and the work that goes on behind the scenes keeping people safe.

We spent a lovely evening at Kila Creative Studios, a photographic studio and production house, founded and run by brother and sister, Laura and Kieran.

We were interested to learn about their business and their ambition to support York’s reputation as a UNESCO City of Media Arts and help support others in the ever changing creative media world.

The studio offers small local businesses and charities an accessible photo and video space, an area for podcasts, as well as skill building workshops, including a body- confidence photography service, all of which are designed to build confidence and knowledge.

We enjoyed a wonderful curry lunch at the Merchant Adventurers Hall.

This is the fourth year the Army Benevolent Fund, the British Army’s national charity has hosted this regional flagship fundraiser, following a suggestion by Ashley Mason, and each year it gets even better.

The lunch helps strengthens links between the city and the Army as well as raising vital funds to help support serving soldiers, veterans and their families.

Great to hear about the work of the charity and to meet members of the armed forces. It was lovely to see our very own York Waites who are alsyssupportive, look splendid and show our historic links with the military.

We attended a really interesting event organised by the York independent State School Partnership (ISSP).

The ISSP brings young people together from across the education system to provide opportunities for everyone snd to promote social cohesion and break down disadvantages.

This event was the result of a six week programme where young people were put in groups and tasked into planning a festival aimed at school aged students. As well as working with people they didn’t really know, they needed to carry out research, look at venues, costings, pricing, advertising, supported by mentors, and finally a very short six weeks later make a presentation to a packed room at the iconic Merchant Adventurers Hall in a Dragon’s Den format.

We are pictured here with the judges (from the ISSP, Betty’s and the Merchant Adventurers) who had to make the very difficult decision of who had won. They were all so incredible we were grateful we didn’t have to make that judgement.

However we look forward to seeing the very bright future these junior entrepreneurs have!

We welcomed our newest citizens and their families to the Mansion House on Tuesday.

This is one of the most wonderful and moving ceremonies we take part in and every former Civic Party agrees it is one of the most special things they do. It’s great when we meet these citizens later on in the year, seeing some of the incredible work they are doing here in our City.

These new citizens came from 14 different countries around the world. As well as paying thousands of pounds to become a citizen they have to complete a Life In The UK test, about British Culture and history. It’s not easy with questions such as “In what year was Habeus Corpus incorporated into Law?” And “when did Britain become permanently separated from the continent by the English Channel?”

So a huge congratulations to them all and of course Welcome to York!

(Just in case you are wondering - Habeus Corpus was 1679 and the English Channel was around 10,000 years ago!)
