We joined with hundreds of pilgrims who gathered in York from across the country and further afield to honour the memory of St Margaret Clitherow and to celebrate her legacy. To see so many people coming together was an amazing tribute to the Pearl of York and a wonderful spectacle as we travelled through the streets of York from the Bar Convent to the York Oratory. Her story really is a huge part of York’s history and her legacy lives on.

We had a great Saturday afternoon last week at York Sports Village for the York Kids Triathlon.

Over 900 young people aged between 5 and 16 gathered to take part in the challenging swim, cycle and run event with different distances.

We watched them sprint across the finishing line and ring the winners bell before presenting them with their treasured medals, certificates and a very welcome cooling jelly!

Thanks to UK Triathlon for organising and of course the amazing triathletes who took part.

An absolute joy to welcome 25 brand new citizens from 18 different countries to the very moving citizenship ceremony.
They had passed many tests to get to this point including the Citizenship Test which includes questions such as: how many members does the Northern Ireland Assembly have? Which 2 languages were the basis of modern English ? And what relation was Katherine Howard to Anne Boleyn? Some of the questions are really tricky!

It was a lovely ceremony made even more special because The Lord Mayor’s granddaughters, Cora and Agnes attended and Cora even helped out with the photos!

The inspirational people who received their citizenship certificates came from all walks of life and included GPs, nurses, support workers and so many more.

In case you were wondering it’s 90 members, Norman-French and Anglo Saxon and finally they were cousins!

We had a lovely time looking at the wonderful York River Arts. Such a lot of amazing talent on show and the creativity was incredible.

Something for everyone and the artists were keen to share their knowledge and spark out creative leanings.

Fabulous paintings of York, Jewellery created from silver spoons, rings formed from old copper pipes, bags woven from old tea shirts, neon posters, beautiful ceramics, there was even a bad advice gum machine!

York rescue boat were there highlighting the importance of river safety.
Thanks to Caroline Turner for her amazing organisational skills and showing us around.

We joined the York Inset Scooter Club at Murton Park, York following their charity run from Sherburn to raise money for York’s Magnolia Centre.

York Normandy Veteran, Ken Cooke was there to greet them before we all took part in a short service to mark VJ Day.

Then we all took part in a steam train journey before ending the day with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday and a slice of delicious cake to mark our hero’s 101st birthday!

Last Saturday we attended the society event of the season, the masquerade ball, with feasting, dancing and witty banter, but who (or what) will be revealed when the masks are removed!

A night to remember and of course our gratitude must go to Ask Italian York for hosting this magnificent event, York Mansion House Team for their skilful organisation, the superb musicians who provided a feast for the ears, the dance tutors who helped hone the skills of those not used to such grand occasions and the lightening speed of the portrait painter who gave us these images.

Another successful Georgian Festival! Well done all.

We had a great time at Huntington Gala, where we were entertained by the incredible Tengu School of Taiko. We were even given a special drum tuition session, which was more energetic than we imagined!

Dancing and magic were also featured. Huge thanks to Huntington Parish Council for all the organisation and Huntington Sports Club for hosting and of course all the stall holders and participants.

Also great to bump into many councillors that were there to show support.

We had a great night with the York Area Group, Derwent Valley Light Railway at Murton Park. We were greeted by our hero, Normandy veteran and honorary freedom of the city holder, Ken Cook, as we inspected the Yorkshire Army Cadet Force. We had a ride on the recently installed miniature railway, as well as on a beautiful steam train. We also enjoyed a lovely BBQ! Huge thanks to all the volunteers at Derwent Valley Light Railway, Murton Park, the cadets and of course Ken, for making this such a special occasion.
