Our Place Walkshop - Acomb's Hidden History: The Carr

Fri 3 Jul 2026 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

In this Our Place walkshop, supported by York Civic Trust, we will explore the history and heritage of The Carr area of Acomb. Meeting at Acomb Explore at 10am, we will go out on a 90-minute circular walk around The Carr. The route will go up Front Street, Carr Lane, Woodlea Bank, Danebury Drive, Fishponds Wood and Beech Grove, before returning to the library. During the walk we will discuss some of the rich heritage and fascinating stories from this part of Acomb, and there will be opportunity for further discussion back in the library. Please note: the route is around 1.5 miles long, and is not flat, so might not be suitable for persons of restricted mobility.

It is almost Summer Reading Challenge time again!

This year's theme is 'Read to the Beat' which aims to celebrate the joy and power of music to inspire us to move and connect – all through the magic of reading! Children are challenged to read any books they choose throughout the summer and will receive rewards along the way.

Children join up for FREE from Saturday 11 July at your local Explore Library, now let the beat kick in and the reading begin.

Do you need DofE volunteering hours? Want to boost your UCAS application? Help us deliver the Summer Reading Challenge this summer!

We are looking for volunteers throughout July and August to sign children up to the Challenge, talk about the books they've read, give out rewards and potentially welcoming families to our summer activities.
