𝗚𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮-𝗡𝗥𝗪 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗡𝗥𝗙

Mr. Justice Kofi Bimpeh, Head of the Ghana-NRW University Alliance Office in Accra, visited Acting Administrator Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah to discuss potential collaboration opportunities between GNRF and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The Ghana–NRW University Alliance is a strategic partnership linking Ghanaian universities and institutions with seven prominent universities in NRW, Germany.

The Alliance is built on mutually beneficial partnerships that create opportunities for Ghanaian and German institutions to collaborate, exchange knowledge and expertise, strengthen research capacity, facilitate student and staff mobility, develop academic partnerships, and pursue joint initiatives.

A delegation from the Graduate Student Association of Ghana (GRASAG), national level, has paid a courtesy call on the Ag. Administrator of GNRF, Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, to discuss potential collaborative opportunities that could enhance research support for Ghanaian graduate students. The meeting gave the association and GNRF an opportunity to introduce their respective mandates, discuss the current state of research funding, identify areas of mutual interest, and explore ways to support graduate students and strengthen Ghana's research ecosystem.

Expanding Research Results, Shaping Ghana's Open Research and Open Science Future.

The Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF) welcomed INASP in Accra for a one-day session on Open Research and Open Science.

The acting Administrator, Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, welcomed the team and highlighted GNRF's rapid progress, milestones, and stakeholder engagements, including a recent session on Good Research Management Practices. Her message was clear: establish effective systems early to facilitate opportunities.

The GNRF embraces open science as a catalyst for open innovation through policies that mandate the publication of research findings in open-access journals within 12 months of completion, while safeguarding the intellectual property rights of researchers and innovators. An action plan is currently being developed with GNRF.

Our Ag. Administrator, Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, delivered a solidarity address at the Ghana Higher Education Summit on 26 August 2026 at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana.

The summit was held under the theme "Universities at Crossroads: Charting Sustainable Funding Pathways for Inclusive Higher Education."

The Ghana National Research Fund is building the systems that world-class research institutions are measured by.

On 25 and 26 August 2026, the GNRF concluded a two-day training workshop on the Good Research Management Practice (GRMP) Standard, organised by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation) in Accra.

The workshop was attended by the Fund's leadership, including Ag. Administrator Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah and Ag. Deputy Administrator Prof. Shamsu-Deen Ziblim, alongside GNRF staff members drawn from Research and Innovation, Finance, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs, Procurement, and IT.

The GRMP Standard, formally published as ARS 1024:2025, is the world's first international standard dedicated specifically to the management of research institutions and research activities. Developed through a continent-wide process involving over 150 experts from more than 25 countries, it represents an Africa-led benchmark for how research institutions should be governed, managed and held accountable.

The workshop also covered the Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) standard, which focuses on the systems through which organisations receive, award and manage grant funding.
The two days were dedicated to building a shared understanding of these standards across the Fund and to beginning the development of an institutional roadmap that will guide GNRF's path toward compliance and certification.

For the GNRF, this is about building the trust and credibility that researchers, government, development partners and the public deserve from a national research fund.

DRID PAYS A COURTESY CALL ON GNRF

A delegation from the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development (DRID) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), led by its Director, Prof. Enoch F. Sam, has paid a courtesy call on the Acting Administrator and Management of the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF). The visit gave the delegation an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Fund’s operations, learn about current and upcoming calls and grant opportunities, and explore areas for collaboration.

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development (DRID) at the University of Education, Winneba, oversees research and manages research grants. It aims to improve staff, faculty, and group skills in developing proposals. It also supervises research policy creation and enforcement, ensuring research aligns with UEW’s strategic plan and goals.

Prof. Enoch F. Sam expressed appreciation to GNRF Management and highlighted DRID’s role in managing the university’s research fund, building researchers’ capacity and supporting grant acquisition to promote research and innovation at UEW.

Dr Richard Osei Agyei, Coordinator of the Consultancy and Patent Services Unit at DRID, outlined the scope of DRID's activities and explained how its main focus areas align with the GNRF mission in a presentation. He emphasised that the University is ready to cultivate the talent necessary to advance research and innovation vital for economic and societal growth.

Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah reaffirmed the Ghana National Research Fund’s (GNRF) commitment to fostering strong partnerships with universities, research institutions, industry, and other key stakeholders. She highlighted the significant institutional progress made by the Fund, including the development of a robust Grant Management System to support transparent and efficient research funding. She further underscored opportunities for joint research calls, strategic partnerships, and collaborative research and innovation projects aimed at strengthening Ghana’s research and innovation ecosystem and advancing national development.

Director, DRID; Dr Charity Esenam Anor, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator, DRID; Dr Adams Osman, Research, Grants Sourcing and Proposal Development Coordinator, DRID; Prof. R. Addai Munumkum, IERIS; Prof. Fofo Lomotey, Dean of Foreign Languages Education; and Prof. Ishmael Y. Dadson, Vice Dean of Social Sciences Education.

Associates For Change Pays a Working Visit to the GNRF

Today, Dr Leslie Casely-Hayford, Principal Development Consultant at Associates For Change and her team visited the Secretariat to discuss potential collaboration on research areas including complementary basic education, psychosocial support, a strategic focus on girls’ education, and a digital learning initiative aimed at reaching out-of-school children in fragile, conflict-affected, and violence-prone settings.

AssociateS For Change is a Ghana-based research firm with over 30 years of research experience, with partners in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Burkina Faso and works with universities across Africa, with a focus on improving the quality of basic education in Africa.

Dr Leslie stated that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Development Studies, along with various domestic and international universities, think tanks, and other partners, to enhance the quality of education. Their primary focus is on improving basic education, which has been neglected as attention has mainly been on secondary schools. She indicated that 60%-70% of their efforts are concentrated in West Africa, primarily in Ghana and some other West African countries.

She said their research firm specialises in partnering with governments on policy and strategic planning to enhance education quality in Africa and to inform them about innovations that should be scaled up, helping children learn through various innovations while maintaining parents' livelihoods and contribution in the process. She added that they provide psychosocial support for teachers going into conflict zones. They also measure the efficacy and impact of those interventions in education, governance, gender equality, and agriculture.

Prof. Shamsu-Deen Ziblim, Ag. Dep. Administrator for the Fund, expressed appreciation for the visit and the Secretariat's readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to realise its mandate by exploiting all collaborative opportunities. He explained the Fund's mandate, the constitution of the Board and Technical Committee, and the Fund's Priority Areas and strategic plan.

He expressed the Secretariat's openness to further discussion of various collaborations within the Fund's mandate and priority areas to scale up improvements in basic education and education as a whole for national development.
